I hurt my back and omg it hurts so muhuhuhuch.
Today I watched How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
So, a musical about a very ambitious young man who rises through the ranks of a company really fast.
This was a lot better whenever I was picturing Darren in the main role, but tbh I didn't connect with it that much. I'm not ambitious, and I thought the lead was mostly irritating. Also, watching Mad Men cast a somewhat critical eye over the sexism of the 60s makes us forget about how horribly sexist it really was - there's a whole number about secretaries in this that I'm pretty sure made smoke actually come out of my ears. There was some really good choreography, and the singing was great with super catchy songs, and the costumes were fantastic, but the sexism was just. So. Bad. It was so bad. Without the sexism I think I would have really enjoyed the thing.
I've got to assume the current Broadway musical makes a lot of changes, or it would still be really offensive. I'm hoping that there's better development of the female lead. With that, some of the stuff would work well and be very cute. Also, Darren will be in nearly every scene of this thing, so that's cool.
