Okay, firstly, I loved the look of the whole film. It was gorgeous, Tim Burton-esque with lovely setting and just the most beautiful costumes. All the characters looked perfect, particularly the kids, Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine, who were just perfect in my opinion. The settings were almost too gorgeous to be true - Lake Lachrymose was wonderfully moody and that house was so cool. The Reptile Room was awesome too, all the snakes all over the place.

Jim Carrey was way too Jim Carrey. I think Count Olaf is very over-the-top but the whole mouth thing pissed me off. His costumes were excellent though. Stefano was the best character, Captain Sham was overdone.

Sunny's subtitles and the opening and closing credits were works of genius, just hilarious. And having the elf pop up later in the car as a toy and Sunny bite his head off? Genius. Also loved Jude Law's narration, I think they got the character of Lemony Snicket down wonderfully. I love Lemony Snicket.

I just wanna steal Klaus from the screen and take him home. And I can see why they needed to slightly overuse Violet's hair-ribbon thing - it helped set up Klaus for his "what would Violet do" scene later.

I think they cut too much and added too much (I've only read the first three books, does that whole spyglass/arson thing pop up later? Coz I was just confused.) The ending at the end was pure cheesy crap, I hated that so much. I like the dark and gloomy endings with their little rays of hope that occur in the books. The idea of *everything* Aunt Josephine was afraid of happening during the hurricane also pissed me off royally, though I liked them being stuck in the house.

Overall it was not perfect but certainly not as bad as it could have been given the circumstances. Fortunately Carrey wasn't in it enough to actually ruin it, and the kids brought the right kind of sweetness and energy to the picture for it to not be totally depressing, as it could well have been. I liked the lovely quotes directly from the book about the meanings of phrases and the death of a loved one.

Finally, Aunt Josephine, it's Klaus and I, not Klaus and Me. ARG. I thought grammar was supposed to be her life?!

Meanwhile, went to Luke's birthday party (so cute) today and sent off all my cards, so they are coming to the people I promised them to! And I found $100 in an old book, which was pretty damn nifty.

I already did a link and pic post earlier in the day.

ETA: I know I said I wouldn't post any pics but after watching QaF tonight with the heart-wrenching scenes with Justin crying on Brian's chest and Michael breaking down and telling Brian I had to post this:

It's [livejournal.com profile] paddies's. And damn.
