Music is cool.

I know, it's such a deep and poignant observation. But I've been downloading a lot lately and hey, I like it. Especially recent posts on [livejournal.com profile] frozenwithin and [livejournal.com profile] _jamjar's journals (Elvis and Stone Roses, respectively.)

Today was fine - first Saturday in a LONG time neither working nor sick in the morning. Swapped for Monday afternoon, which is really quite nice. I mostly just hung out, went for a walk. Nothing exciting happened.

Songs of the Day: Yes, songs. Six covers of My Funny Valentine, one Christian Kane (Lindsey on Angel), one Ben Lee, one Red Dwarf, one Shivaree, one Robbie Williams, one Stereophonics.

My Funny Valentine - Ella Fitzgerald.

It's Ella. Download it rightthefuck now.
Behold the way our fine feathered friend/ His virtue doth parade/ Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend/ The picture thou hast made

My Funny Valentine - Rufus Wainwright

Unsurprisingly, my favourite. The same beginning as Ella has, which isn't in the other versions. Gorgeous. Sublime. So very Rufus.
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair/ Conceal thy good intent/ Thou noble upright truthful sincere/ And slightly dopey gent

My Funny Valentine - Elvis Costello

A very straightforward cover of the song, from the Bridget Jones 2 soundtrack. Designed to be background music, not really listened to like Ella or Rufus.
My funny valentine/ Sweet comic valentine/ You make me smile with my heart

My Funny Valentine - Frank Sinatra

Did he sing the first version? This sounds like it could be the original, it's got that kind of quality. Plus Sinatra invented cool.
Your looks are laughable/ Unphotographable/ Yet you’re my favourite work of art

My Funny Valentine - Matt Damon

I need to put all thoughts of The Talented Mr. Ripley out of my head when I listen to this, because it's too creepy otherwise. VERY low, soft, lovely. Also the reason that I always think the song's about a man.
Is your figure less than greek/ Is your mouth a little weak/ When you open it to speak/ Are you smart?

My Funny Valentine - Constantine Maroulis

This is a much busier version than a lot of the others and not my favourite, but Constantine's got the right quality in his voice to carry the song. He was a contestant in this year's American Idol - I assume the reason he didn't go as far as Bo is that he didn't look as good in leather pants. Which is why I didn't like him as much. Yes, I am that shallow.
Good singer, though.
But don’t change a hair for me/ Not if you care for me/ Stay little valentine stay/ Each day is valentine’s day

Pretty as a Picture - Christian Kane

I'm not a country fan, but almost always a fan of just a guy and a guitar. Christian has a really great voice, and this song gives me goosebumps. Plus it doesn't hurt to have this mental image while you listen:

Streets littered with diamonds/ Every one's glistening/ This whole world shines so brightly/ I can't see a thing

Catch My Disease - Ben Lee

Much happier than it sounds. Ben Lee is kickass, he's so quirky and fun. Bit like he'd fit right into [livejournal.com profile] peter_and_fran. Always has a huge back-up band with interesting instruments to enhance the music, but doesn't necessarily need it.
My head is a box full of nothing/ And that's the way I like it/ My garden's a secret compartment/ And that's the way I like it

Tongue Tied - Danny John-Jules (The Cat, Red Dwarf)

I have so many funny songs on my computer. I'm a sucker for a good laugh, and this one's really hilarious, particularly if you've seen it on the show.
When I saw you for the first time/ My knees began to quiver/ And I got a funny feeling/ In my kidneys and my liver (digestive system baby!)

Goodnight Moon - Shivaree

I got this ages ago but only just started really listening to it. Slightly dark, very much beyond cool (from the Kill Bill Vol. 1 soundtrack, so, duh). And sung by a girl, which is always rare for me.
So goodnight moon/ I want the sun/ If it's not here soon/ I might be done/ No it won't be too soon 'til I say goodnight moon

It's De-Lovely - Robbie Williams

He just does swing so well. From the soundtrack of (obviously) De-Lovely, and completely abuses the English language, though surprisingly I don't mind that much. I guess it's okay as long as you sing it...
So please be sweet, my chickadee/ And when I kiss ya, just say to me/ It's delightful, it's delicious, it's delectable, it's delirious/ It's dilemma, it's de limit, it's deluxe, it's de-lovely!

Mr Writer - Stereophonics

One of my favourite Stereophonics songs. Always makes me think of Rita Skeeter, in spite of her status as a non-mister, because it suits her to a tee.
Are you so lonely you don't even know me/ But you'd like to stone me/ Mr. Writer, why don't you tell it like it is/ Why don't you tell it like it really is/ Before you go on home

Link of the Day: I suppose I'm just going to give up and admit my hopeless addiction to [livejournal.com profile] peter_and_fran, which, after [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project, is my favourite ongoing fic saga. Probably because I only follow those two, as any other WIPs I've started lost me almost immediately. [livejournal.com profile] peter_and_fran is like...what canon would be, if they were a band.

Pics of the Day: You remember how I told you that those hires pics of Dom in the sex jacket on Leno would eventually find their way into my journal? Well, here they are. Along with one from the Golden Globes that I just found floating around in my folders and fell in love with and had to post. Obviously I got it in a spam from [livejournal.com profile] tinalikesstuff at some point. I love his shiny blue suit.
