As it gets later, rather than shrinking the number of fanfiction windows I have open is growing. It's all because of Slasha Baby and my attempts to make minyafalas love shoebox_project. I mean, obviously I had to read my favourite chapters again. And it's not my fault most of the chapters are my favourites, is it? I love Shoebox to a point where it's almost indecent. I mean, how is it that even after reading so many times it can still make me laugh and then bring me to the verge of tears? How is it one little mention of a mysterious tattoo can tie knots in my guts?

I hate Peter as a character. I will always hate Peter. They can try to make Peter as sympathetic as possible but every single word I read the word 'traitor' reverberates through my skull. He is a coward, a disloyal piece of slime, and I hate him.

They write him very well, but that doesn't change what he becomes.

Yeah, I get that. What I think is brilliant about how they write him is that he seems totally loyal and clueless, not as if he's harboring resentments or urges to betray his friends while they were at Hogwarts. Because when they were at Hogwarts he was loyal to them. Something happened later that caused him to turn (and I don't think it was something as simple as being under the Imperious or that James pissed him off or anything. I think it's probably more simple in that he's a coward, and easily seduced. I don't get from canon that Peter is either strong enough in his own convictions or evil enough to have actually hated James and Lily. I think he was probably completely weak and scared and thought he was saving his own ass. I wrote a whole diatribe on this once...I wonder if I can find it...)

1. The first character I first fell in love with - The Weasleys. I say that because I loved Fred, George and Ron very quickly in the first book.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now - Sirius Black, I think. I liked him, but I didn't fall in love with him until the fifth book. Woe.

I don't agree that he was 'loyal' to them at Hogwarts. He liked the protection they offered, which caused him to sort of...grovel at their feet, rather than actually being loyal. I agree with Sirius's assessment that Peter just liked being around the people most likely to protect him, the 'biggest bullies on the playground.'

I think I dislike him *more* because he doesn't hate James and Lily. He betrays people who never wronged him because he's scared. Nasty little piece of shit.

Thinking about Peter makes my blood boil.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now - I'd say Shannon, but I don't know if it's even the character I like there, so I think I'll go with Jin. I adore him now and at the beginning he came across as a jerk. Brilliant, underrated performance from DDK.

With the gaps in canon backstory, it's all how we interpret it, I suppose. I see your points, but what I've gotten from it is that Peter wasn't sitting around trying to come up with ways to betray them when he was in school. He probably never even considered something like that. Because he was, like you said, in a place where he was most protected and secure. I'm curious to know just how he managed to be one of the Marauders. It's just, well...that's the thing. He was one of them. He was an integral part of their group. He couldn't have been completely useless. There had to be things about him that made people like Sirius and James not only tolerate having him around, but wanting him around. He was their friend. I have to believe that they, and Remus, were far too smart to have been completely duped while in school. And besides, I don't think Peter as a character was ever smart enough to dupe them anyway.

As for once they were out of school, then yes, it makes sense that he'd be easily convinced that his greater chance of survival would be to join the Big Bad. I just don't think he gloated about the death of James and Lily afterward...I don't know, maybe it's just me projecting how I am onto a character that is basically deplorable, but I have a hard time thinking that he was proud of himself after getting his friends killed. Especially when the result was that he actually now had no one's protection. (I have a whole theory on that, and how he managed to kill all those Muggles, landing Sirius in Azkaban, etc.) As for how he is currently in canon, well...HATE.

I agree he wasn't, you know, sitting around plotting their deaths. He liked them. And from what I gather in OotP they really like the fact that he looks up to them, that he craves that protection and attention from them. Sirius and James seem to fancy themselves superstars. I suppose that their innate decency prevented them from ever even thinking that he'd betray them so terribly. As you say, Peter wasn't *looking* to dupe them or betray them when there was no cause to. He was just following them around, mooning over them. I imagine that Remus, being the sort of bloke who believes the best of people, just accepted and maybe even felt a little sorry for Peter.

I don't think he was proud of himself...but I think, if Voldemort hadn't been taken out, that he would have just justified his deplorable actions. I mean, not only did he betray James and Lily to their deaths, he framed Sirius for it - James's best friend, Harry's godfather, the person who was possibly most loyal to and loved James more than anyone (in that platonic way.) And yes, he killed a lot of innocent people he didn't know at all just to protect himself. He's slime.

Hmm, I don't know. It depends on who you're talking to. As I spend a lot of my time with the under-12 set, yes, lots of people hate Snape. It also depends on whether or not you believe in his guilt after reading HBP.

There's always someone who hates a character you love. I mean, for reasons unfathomable to me, dryope loves Jack and hates Sayid. To each their own. There seems to be large amounts of Harry hate, which must be difficult if you're a fan of a series of books called "Harry Potter and the..."

Here's what I think about Peter setting Sirius up: Maybe Peter didn't actually intend for Muggles, or anyone, to get killed when he performed whatever spell he performed. Maybe the theories on him not being very good at spells is the exact reason why twelve Muggled died - he probably didn't know exactly what he was doing; acting impulsively; was scared that Sirius was going to kill him for what he'd done, or was just plain scared of Sirius in general. If spells are tied into the emotions of the Wizard or Witch casting them, and Peter's were all a mess then it's possible that a sub-par Wizard like Peter could have goofed up whatever spell he was intending on casting. For all we know, he didn't know that Sirius was going to find him so soon and he panicked.

Maybe emotions aren't the right word...maybe it's more of a concentration thing that I'm thinking of. It's been pointed out a lot in the books that if the person isn't concentrating enough (like when Harry is first learning Expecto Patronum) then the spell doesn't work as well. And Hermione is always quick to point out the mispronunciations of words, etc. So possibly Peter was so frazzled that he wasn't concentrating? Add fear, guilt, anger, whatever to that and it's not too surprising that the spell may have gone wrong. And there's always the fact that Peter probably thought he was going to be elevated to a higher status once Voldemort killed the Potters, and when that backfired - literally - on him and he was made useless, suddenly Peter was left not only without a place with Voldemort, but without a place with his old friends. He was, for the first time probably since before he started at Hogwarts, competely alone. What was a follower to do but find a way to disappear? And what a convienient way for him to disappear than to pin it on Sirius? I think the one thing Peter is probable best at is scrambling to save himself, and Sirius, by charging out and finding him so quickly, gave him the perfect way. It was a domino effect. I'm NOT defending Peter here, but had Sirius not found him on the street, then I don't think he would have been put in Azkaban at all (because no Muggles would have been killed) and he would have been able to tell the Order that he'd asked James to switch the secret keeper to Peter, etc. etc.

I completely do not understand the HP fans that hate Harry. At all. First of all, there's the obvious: the books are ABOUT HIM. Secondly, I find very little to dislike about Harry.

I used to not like Sayid either. I liked him at first, then didn't like him at all, then I liked him again. I really like him now. More than I ever have. I mean, I love Locke, and there's a LOT of people who hate him too, and I can't see why. (But then, I also don't completely see why people hate Jack or Sawyer either). Sometimes I see so much hate for the characters of any given fandom that I wonder why those people are watching (or reading) at all.

Eh, I disagree there. I think Peter either didn't care about the Muggles getting blown up or actually did it on purpose in order to make it all more convincing and really paint Sirius as a lunatic. I don't know that Peter was really that terrible at spells - he did manage to become a successful Animagus, even if it did require a lot of help, and he managed Voldemort's resurrection spell with a missing hand.

I think Peter fully intended for Sirius to go to Azkaban. I mean, he'd *just* set James and Lily up to be killed. I don't think he wanted anyone knowing that it had been him who had betrayed the Potters - at least framing Sirius for it gave him that slim, tiny chance that if someone found him out he could say that he was scared of Sirius or the Death Eaters or someone. No, I don't think that what he did was accidental. But as I've said before, I have a very low opinion of Peter.

I can tell you why I don't like Jack - he's boring, and he keeps crying all the bloody time. I mean, I'm all for sensitive men, but Jack cries at inappropriate moments. He can also be a martyr, which is a trait I've never particularly liked.

Here's why I like talking about stuff with you: our opinions are different, and yet, I see your side and I *think* you see mine (if only just a little). :) And really, I'm not defending Peter or trying to find the "good" in him. He's a traitor. He should be killed. I always try to find the good in a character even when they're evil though...I don't know why. I don't think everyone starts out evil. Except maybe Tom Riddle. I've never seen any reason to think he's ever been anything other than horrible.

It's an interesting theory, and one I hadn't heard before.

I think I'm a bit weird, but I have a very sever hatred of continued disloyalty. Characters who have a temporary lapse in loyalty but then come through stronger than ever in the end are usually among my favourites. I like characters that have to face adversity but are loyal and brave in the end - Sirius, Snape, Edmund, Spike, even Faith, I suppose. But I really despise people who are knowingly disloyal to such an extreme extent and then never repent. Peter, as I see it, is totally unrepentant. Not only that, but he continues to ty his tricks years later after he's been found out. He's a rat. And the worst thing, the absolutely sickening thing about him, is that he *isn't* evil. He's just pathetic.

Tom Riddle's interesting, isn't he? I think there really are kids out there like that, it's scary.
