Here's that Supernatural canon vs. fanon thingamee I promised. It's unfocussed at best.
By the way, this was not a rec list. Some of the stories in there are great, some are terrible, some are in between. For a rec list check out SPN Recs That Ate the World.

What set me off thinking about this was the introduction of Ellen and Alex, who are honestly the least imaginative Mary Sues the writers could have invented. Mary Sues are always perfect for the universe they've been inserted into, and these two are no different. Tough, beautiful, knew John, into the whole supernatural gig. Better at Dean than what he does best. The truth is, there are plenty of things I would LOVE to see happen on the show that I've read in fanfiction. There are many, many fanfics I have read in this fandom that I would rather see than many of the episodes I've seen, and certainly more than the sides I've read for everything after next season's pilot. There are come amazing, haunting, funny, clever, episodic stories out there. This post is not dedicated to them. This post is dedicated to the most common trends I've noticed in Supernatural fanfiction. After all, if they're Mary Suing us, surely this is bound to show up at some point...right?
What to expect from the next season of Supernatural, now that the writers seem to be taking their cue from fanfiction:
6. A day will repeat itself, Groundhog Day-style.
See: Crossing the Line, Feels like Midnight.
5. At least one of the guest characters - more likely than not Missouri - will show up again.
See: Pinion, Entity, pretty much every post-Devil's Trap fic at fanfiction.net (for Missouri anyway.)
4. One will get sick, usually with the kind of flu that is extremely rare. You know, ridiculously high temperatures requiring ice baths, delirium, the like. The other will take care of them.
See: In Want and Sympathy, Through Health and Sickness, Strangers and Angels, Between the Shadows, Cracked Perfecting Images.
3. Dean and Sam will be seen having sex. They will have always been having sex, we just didn't know about it. And if you want examples, this isn't the place to look - I don't read them.
2. Dean and Sam will spoon in bed on a near-nightly basis.
See: Changed, The Rest is Still Unwritten, All out of Sight, Where you Land, Chains, Rockabye ...oh, fuck it. If it has a warning that says it's fluff, or shmoop, or even just brotherly love, odds are they spoon at some point.

And, going by the recent spate of fics, in real life Jensen Ackles will fuck Chad Michael Murray totally at random. See: All Talk and No Action, Waste Some Time With Me, Flesh and Blood, The Give and Take, You and Me, Proving Everyone Wrong, and A Single Moment - all posted within the last few days. Was there a challenge?
Okay, now I'm planning a giant spam about the MetalliCar, Serenity, the Black Pearl, and the Millenium Falcon. Captains and their ships.

Not really, but now that I've said it, I will from now on.
Don't forget the recent spate of gender swaps...that plot point is almost a sure thing with all the gender swap fics I have seen and actively avoided.
