Tonight I saw Superman Returns

Duuuude, that was COOL.

Unfortunately I'm not a four year old, and unfortunately the fact that nobody notices that Clark is Superman with glasses still boggles my mind. Once you get past that there's a million other inconsistencies to worry about. How does he fit his cloak under his clothes? Where does he put his glasses when he's super? Oh well, the movie brought the pretty in spades (Brandon Routh is beautiful), and it was shot in Australia which can only be a good thing. Am I the only one who finds Clark Kent, the nerdy guy with the glasses who gets all excited and bumbles a lot, far hotter than Superman? Yes? Okay. Brandon Routh was nowhere near as bad as everyone's making him out to be. He managed to keep Superman sympathetic and sweet, which is hard something because he's so super. He's not better or worse than Christopher Reeve, and he's leagues ahead of the likes of Dean Cain and Tom fucking Welling. The SuperStalker thing freaked me out a little too. WTF spying, Clark?! The visuals were great, the special effects very impressive (although sometimes the scale of the Big Things had me kinda zoning out) and the action scenes exciting (Lois Lane must have superskin to be able to be thrown around THAT MUCH without a single bruise, cut or bump anywhere.)

As for the plot...it was okay. It was kind of bittersweet, I think I would have been more into it had I been more into Kate Bosworth. She looked SO young - it just seemed so ridiculous, having a kid that age (clearly far older than 4) and a whole other life after Superman while looking about 23. I liked the kid-thingy, the setup may have been painfully obvious but hey, this is Superman.

I liked all the not-so-subtle visual representations of what was going on, like the dog-eat-dog world and Superman with the world (the spinning globe from the top of The Daily Planet) on his shoulders, like they've done a million times before, but it's still funny. Which, why do they even HAVE that globe? It could probably do with more self-referencing.

I was interested in the fiance. He's sweet, handsome in a very traditional way, tall, strong, flies...he's Superman, essentially, which isn't entirely surprising, given that's clearly Lois's type. He's not an idiot, either, and I have a feeling that he's not going to take well to being treated like one when he finds out the kid-thingy's not his. Honestly, Lois is just so frustrating, and not just because the character is selfish and irritating. I mean, gee, it must be difficult to be Kate Bosworth. James Marsden, Brandon Routh, Orlando Bloom. It's a hard life. *sporks her on principle* Parker Posey was less Parker Posey-like than usual, though still not really playing any role other than Parker Posey. Jimmy Olsen was ADORABLE and so very, very gay.

It also stars Australia's own, and probably only, dancing gay ex-football playing actor, Ian Roberts. I spent every minute he was on screen poking my sister or father and hissing "I'm telling you, that's Ian Roberts!"

Finally, Lex? May be no Mike Rosenbaum sex-on-legs Lex (they cast everybody else so young they might as well have) but he was fantastic. I love Lex Luthor. He takes such absolute pleasure in being evil. I love the way he basically whored himself out to an old woman for her inheritance, I love his wigs and his crazy and his intelligence and his classical music. More Lex!

I think Superman works better as an allegory than as a person in a place, which is why he's such an iconic comic book figure, but in movies there's just so much disbelief to suspend. I enjoyed the movie, but still found myself asking why? how? who? what? You know, the reporter questions.

I'm giving this one a 7 out of 10.

ETA: I feel compelled to link you all to Superman is a Dick. Because really, in the comics, he is.

40 things they don't think you know about Superman, though I know a bunch of them, so they're maybe not as smart as they thought.

I think I posted it recently, but I don't care. It's so sexy.

It's a green bird! It's a green plane! It's...
