I went to a Japanese festival tonight.
I bought some not-great imitation Japanese food, did some very poor imitation Japanese calligraphy and bought some real Japanese candy, which was absolutely the highlight of my night. It was freezing, too. I haven't spoken Japanese in way too long.
So, my internet died on me yesterday just as I started trying to download Supernatural and I wasn't able to get back on until about 2 hours ago. I've started downloading Supernatural again, I'm up to 17%, but I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET!
sargraf has completed her season 1 Supernatural Manlove catalogue with Devil's Trap. I have so much love for these posts I can't even find the words.
Firefly poll.
HOCUS POCUS ICONS FTW.
W.O.E pt. 2.
hackthis is a golden god. Respect this.
TR Knight, who plays George (aka Most Awesome Character After Bailey) on Grey's Anatomy is gay. He's so cute too! I loved his blue hair at the Up-Fronts.
David Walliams gets his kit off onstage while Tony Head stands behind him looking shocked. LOVE IT.
Awesome new Lost Radio contest.
indilime pointed this out:
WHEN DID KEENUA REEVES JOIN LOST?! The other thing that cracks me up is the comments. I'm fairly certain that at least a few of them are by Misfit himself.
teh_indy made new Lost 3.03 and Veronica Mars 3.03 icons.
hp_fridayfive:
1. What is your favorite part of Book 1? Why?
Definitely Ron sacrificing himself during the chess game. That's the first time we really get to see what Ron's capable of in terms of courage and loyalty, a little eleven-year-old boy who's been overshadowed all his life and provides lots of comic relief staunchly facing violence to help his friends. Although a close runner-up has to be the introduction of Snape. 'I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death.' It's scary and dark and beautiful. Such fantastic writing.
2. If Hogwarts really did exist, what area of the castle would you visit first? Why?
I want to see all the common rooms, see how they differ from each other. I have a crush on the Slytherin common room from the second movie, with its big black leather armchairs. They didn't look uncomfortable at all. I've always had a problem with the way JKR described the Slytherin common room - surely the Slytherins would want as much comfort as possible, if Slughorn's any indication.
3. What's your favorite spell or curse? Why?
Absolutely, unquestionable Accio. It's the most useful spell I've ever heard of. I try to use it all the time. In fact, when
tuatha_de's around, I usually just reach my hand out and say 'Accio *whatever I want*' and wait for him to hand it to me.
4. Which Weasley is your favorite? Why?
Ron, I love Ron. For all the reasons stated in my answer to the first answer, but also because I really get Ron. He's so easy to identify with, even when he's totally clueless.
5. If you could see a character from another fandom be dropped into the world of HP, who would it be and why?
PIZ BECAUSE I LOVE PIZ. No, really, it could work! I'd figure out a way for it to work! After all, we don't really KNOW Piz was in Beaverton before he started at Hearst. He COULD have been at Hogwarts...
So, yesterday I saw three movies (what? I had no internet!):
Pitch Black
Why did nobody tell me about this movie before?! I'm kind of a boy, I love a good action scifi movie, and this definitely fits the bill. Apart from a few dodgy effects, Pitch Black ticks all the boxes of good action scifi. It has good scares, an interesting premise, at least one truly great character, plot twists, and a story you care about before the monsters come out for the scare. I kind of like Vin Diesel - I don't think he's hot, but I like him anyway, and he was good in this, as was Radha Mitchell. Riddick really is a great character, I understand now why they wanted to make a spin-off with him. I didn't really get the effects, though - one minute they would've looked at home in a Disney Channel original movie and the next there were gorgeous shots of moving planets and creepy creatures. What's up with that?
Also, check out Jack now! Damn.

Rushmore
This film, on the other hand, I didn't like at all. I've seen Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Royal Tenenbaums, so I'm pretty well acquainted with Wes Anderson's work. Most people seem to cite Rushmore as his best film, but I loved all the others (especially Bottle Rocket, which is definitely worth a look, particularly if you're a fan of the Wilson brothers.) Maybe it was the subject matter or something, but Rushmore made me feel really uncomfortable and frequently bored. It's got the same ideas as Wes Anderson's other films, but there was something distinctly creepier about it. Bill Murray's been doing disaffected a lot lately, but in this he was practically catatonic. I usually love Olivia Williams, but she bored me too. And I love Jason Schwartzmann, but all I can say about this is that he held my interest more than the others did. I just found it painful. Perhaps that's my only nerdy high school experience coming back to haunt me or something, but I really didn't like it.

Blue Velvet
Ah, David Lynch, you crazy fucker. This is one of those critics' favourites, an absolute treasure trove for film nerds. That opening scene with the bright colours and happy small-town folk, followed by a guy getting stung by a bee and a crazed dog, panning down to the bugs in the ground, sets up the tone for the whole movie. It's a creepy, violent, disturbing horror film under a sheen of 50's Sirk-style overarching melodrama in the colours and the dialogue. Basically, it's the most fucked up trip you've ever taken in your life.
Dennis Hopper is totally terrifying in this. I was tense for every single second he was on screen. Laura Dern is beautiful. I was a little bit disappointed by Isabella Rosselini, though, and I can't say Kyle McLachlan's ever done anything for me. I was even a little creeped out by his character and the way he got into the mystery unfolding under his nose. When he discovers what's happening to Dorothy and doesn't try to stop it then I was already on edge, and then his relationship with her is really unsettling. Maybe that's the point. There's definitely that sense in the closing scene, which mirrors the opening scene after seeing all the horrible and violent things that happened before.
And they are really violent. The gore in this isn't Taxi Driver washed-out, with ketchup and cut-aways to avoid looking at what's happening. You see everything - rape, people getting their brains blown out, close-ups on Dennis Hopper taking huge gulps of oxygen and then threatening everyone in sight.
I haven't really talked about whether or not I liked this movie, mostly because I can't. I certainly couldn't turn it off, or look away from it. But I didn't enjoy the experience. You're not supposed to, but that makes it hard for me to rate. I guess with these things you have to rate on impact, not enjoyment.

Sorry. Had to do it.
Mr. C LOVES Wes Anderson and he loves Rushmore. There were a few parts I liked, but it kind of lost me in the middle, too.

I was a *huge* Riddick/Jack shipper back in the day but most of the good fics at ff.net were NC-17 and removed when the site took away that option. And seeing how the fandom's basically dead now, they were never re-uploaded anywhere :(
