Tonight I saw Bobby

Shia! Elijah! David Krumholtz! Christian Slater! Joshua Jackson! Gina's babydaddy! Freddy Rodriguez, who is effing amazing and who I can't wait to see in Grindhouse!
Okay, having listed all the cast I love (and many others put in good performances), the movie was really just okay. Emilio Estevez has a long way to come as a director - he had some strange shot transitions, the film could've been better paced, and there's some odd drifty close-ups that don't work at all. It's also brazenly and infuriatingly preachy, even if you agree with the message. There's one shot of Bill Macy towards the end that made me shiver, but otherwise the direction was pedestrian, and the connections between the characters were tenuous. There were a few too many character summary shots, too - a couple of the characters really could've gone without too many problems.

The cast was amazing, though. Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez (ironically) probably let the team down the most in their scenes, but everyone else was outstanding. Elijah and Lindsay Lohan were particularly good. Yes, Lindsay - she may be an awful person but she isn't an awful actress. There was a fascinating scene between Sharon Stone and Demi Moore that could be a reflection on their careers. The standouts for me were Elijah and Lindsay, Shia and Brian Geraghty's hilarious scenes, and Freddy Rodriguez, who very nearly steals the film with his sweet smiles and careless charisma.

Also amazing was the hair and makeup. Those people should get an award, particularly for the construction Demi Moore had on her head towards the end and David Krumholtz's DEAD STRAIGHT hair. Just brilliant.

7 out of 10
