Meanwhile I've been busy and offline for a couple of days and I'm never going to catch up, so is there anything I've missed?

So, the American university shooting has been all over our news with absolutely horrendous reporting that makes me feel sick (last night they were going on about the killer being a Chinese exchange student. That's BAD REPORTING. And they keep interviewing the ONE Australian student at the university who wasn't actually near the gunman.) This country is simultaneously self-obsessed and far too obsessed with America. Blech. I'm not trying to make light of the situation, but it's disproportionate to coverage of anything that happens anywhere else, except here.

Last night I saw Disturbia

SHIA! And his friend is hot too. Okay, serious review from now on.
It wasn't terrible, pretty much what you'ds expect from a modern take on Rear Window - more out-and-out scares but less intelligence and less of a decent build and suspension of tension. Shia was pretty damn good, but most of the other characters were very stereotyped, and how the HELL did creepy-ass David Morse get ANY play in the first place? It lagged a bit in the middle but for the most part it was an above-average current thriller. The bionculars were cast perfectly. The soundtrack SUCKED.

Germany's media isn't much better, some of the less trustworthy 'newspapers' headlined with 'Student from Berlin survived the Amok hell' or something along those lines. I didn't read, but I'd bet my ass he wasn't anywhere near either.

the news coverage is crazy here too, it's the first news on every report
it's huge if you consider that we have major elections on Sunday!
and they keep interviewing some French exchange student, as if the fact that he's from here changes anything to what he witnessed (which is nothing)

It's a media thing, to interview someone from the targeted audience locality when something like this happens. I'm from Ohio (about six hours from Blacksburg) and all of the TV stations in this city are picking on this one kid from one of the suburbs who happens to go to VT. It's just a strategy thing... they think it will help the audience to relate to the situation better and, thus, to be more attracted to the story, which drives up interest and their ratings. Bada-bing.

Still, though. Inaccurate reporting is not nearly so bad as the accusations that the media are trying to conjure up. It's even worse this time than it was with Columbine. Instead of, "Oh, we have such a horrible gun culture! All you NRA members SUCK!" it's all "THE POLICE ARE STUPID IDIOTS WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE ANYTHING; LET'S FIRE THEM ALL!" And yes, that required the caps... because it really is just that gratiating on my ears as the caps are on your eyes.

As far as how much American media is being relayed to you--is your news affiliated with AP or Reuters? If they are, it's probably just a matter of what news stories are available to them to begin with, because AP and Reuters operate primarily on American news stories. Thus, international stories are probably few and far between. It's one of the many tragedies of international corporations and the process of globalization, I suppose...

I AGREE!!! They're actually saying he's South Korean in the states. Either way, I don't think it should matter. A person is a person. They would say 'figures' to any nationalilty. We have just as bad reporting over here, I promise.

I don't know if I'm misunderstanding your post, but the constant reporting isn't about being obsessed with America at all. It's the worst shooting in the United States EVER. It's going to become a huge political issue here, and that obviously affects everyone because, like it or not, the United States still is a hegemonic power. I mean, obviosuly that power is in decline, but it doesn't change the great amount of influence our domestic policy has on other countries, especially our allies.

It's the same here whenever there is a shooting/bombing in Israel. Since Israel is one of our closest allies, our policy often reflects their policy, and, consequently, events of this nature in Israel become important for our own domestic agenda. I get how the coverage might seem redundant, but that's life for now, I guess. *shrug*

If you're arguing down that road, we should have had more coverage of, for instance, the bombings in London a while back. Or more coverage of Asian tragedies, since we are fostering closer ties with Asia.

Oh, see we had/have non-stop coverage of both of those here. When the tsunami struck a few years ago, there was nothing on the news for over a week except coverage from that. I guess that doesn't necessarily apply to you all :-/.
