Groundbreaking Gays. American only, and the list is...limited.
In more gay news, a Gossip Boy is about to come out. I don't watch that show.
I assume everyone's heard about this? A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly. This is the kind of person I want to shake and yell 'YOU'RE MAKING MY SIDE LOOK BAD!' at. It's all misandry and bullshit, and she's deleting comments she doesn't like. Accusing Joss of raping his wife is so far over the line as to be in another universe.
Discussion here, and she wrote about the reaction in her other blog here (with only the worst comments quoted, and all the rational comments in her journal - of course - deleted, to make Firefly fans look like a bunch of crazy woman-haters.) Probably only a matter of time before it shows up at Fandom Wank. Of course, it has created a widespread 'THIS IS WHY I'M NOT A FEMINIST' response, implying that all feminists = extremist nutcases like this woman. Way to set us back.
I know this is naughty of me, and I'm aware of the whole 'the world is male space' view, but I still found the Firefly = misandry post entertaining.
For a more entertaining extreme view of TV,

I do not think it means what you think it means

And I would think that her definition of rape would probably piss off women who have actual experience with the crime.
I'm reading the comments and... I have no words...

What a fucking nutjob. She's screening comments, too. Only the good ones get to go through now, I guess.

She's getting her 15 minutes of internet fame. I wondered if she even watched the same show I have come to know and love. Women like her are why I am loathe to be called a feminist, the word now conjures up images if hairy legged insane women frothing at the mouth and screaming how all males oppress all women.
Real feminism is in how you live your life, the example you set for your children (if you have them) and for other people.
It's not frothing at the mouth, chanting some nifty slogan or attacking pop culture icons for not subscribing to world as you see it. (Generic you, not you personally)
As I read her rant, I wondered if she even watched the same show I did. Then I decided she is very likely a troll of some sort and picking a topic near and dear to many with a creator who is a pop culture icon. Condemn it all and instant internet fame.
Sadly, very few realize this and keep extending her fifteen minutes. But this is likely why she chose a show fans are so passionate about. She knew it would turn into a huge thing and get her tons of publicity.
I refuse to play her game by commenting or responding in her blog. She is welcome to her opinion, even though it goes against my own. I choose not to read or respond to her.
Silence is more damning to an attention whore than a cutting comment or witty retort.

All I can say is that she must've had a seriously fucked up childhood/adolescence to truly be able to believe some of those things.

Second, that feminist woman took on Serenity with every intention to hate it and to prove people who saw strong female characters in the show to be wrong. It was hardly an objective perspective she used. (For instance, in what world is a man who pays for sexual services a rapist? Inara is a willing participant in the act.) That's all of the attention she's getting from me - any reply on her LJ would just fuel the fire.

i know the chick screened her comments, but i couldn't resist leaving one anyway:
you have to twist men around like this? that isn't feminism. it's looking for a reason. in fact, silly meandering like this takes away from the validity of the issue REAL women (RE: NOT a frakkin space princess) are facing.
i know i can't change you....it's just that when i see stupid so resounding i can't help but....well.....LAUGH in your face.
don't like it, don't watch it. but there are actual women in countries being circumsized and you're worried about joss whedon? really? really...? REALLY?
oh....also....kudos on the brilliant cowardice it takes to only quote comments where its most fitting to you. you're like the fox news of livejournal.
idiot.

This type of thing is EXACTLY why I won't call myself a feminist. My deal is, though, that this is what I heard in the 70s and 80s that completely turned me off labelling myself as a feminist - that was the predominant party line back then.
Now, I just call myself humanist. I don't think any of us should pull ahead at the expense of others, if you know what I mean.
That woman, though...DANG..right off the deep end.

to be perfectly honest, this is how i feel 99.9% of the time about feminism. i understand that it's not all about extreme nutcases and that it's important, as a woman in today's society, to have a vested interest in this, but there are so many negative connotations that go with the word 'feminist' that when i hear it, i shudder.
my mother claims to be a feminist and she's in no way extreme like the woman you linked to in your post; yet every time she says the word i shudder.
you're totally right - it's women like that who give feminism a bad name. :\

I saw a post like this on my flist today and was really saddened by it. I don't see how anyone could take that seriously at all.

Nice.
Also accusing Joss of raping his wife, that to me is slander... She's got no proof, nothing but her own sick, twisted view of the world with which to base that on. Slander, that's libel.

"That is that men who pressure women into sex are rapists. That women who are pressured are not freely consenting and are therefore being raped. There have been a few discussions recently in the rad fem blogosphere debating whether all male initiated sex is rape, given that women are politically, socially and economically subordinate to men. So, in my understanding of Joss Whedon as a rapist is hinges on my definition of rape. I would argue that most 'sex' between men and women, in the contemporary 'sex-positive', pornographic, male-supremacist culture, is rape.
I cannot describe the words of disgust I get reading that post. Well, I could swear lots, but that would just foul up this LJ. ;o)

I read that bit in the comments for the other discussion and gagged. Apparently women are completely incapable of making up their own mind and as soon as sex is suggested to them they submit to being raped?

It's also not the first time I've read/heard such people trying their very hardest to point out how very right they are.
She makes a lot of noise, scares the crap out of everyone by her very existence, and in a few weeks will be just as important as that "Leave Britney Alone" guy.
I thought about posting a comment, but why bother? Just more fuel for the fire. The sooner we all ignore the self-righteous bigot the sooner she'll go back to obscurity.
