I get that people have major issues with the portrayal of African American characters and women but I don't (I read a meta and apparently being racially colorblind, like myself, is bad but...*shrugs*) and that's how I like it, personally. I'm REALLY easy going with everything. I'm like a ball of sunshine. And also 99% of "symbolism" goes right over my head. I'm slow like that. But then again it's tv, and while I love it (and this show) to death, it's not real life, it won't be portrayed like real life. I'm all for women's rights and racial equality in real life of course. I keep my thoughts to myself mostly because if I shared this kind of thing outside my flist, I'd be flogged for sure.
