I forgot to bring my notebook with all my movies in it with me, so I really have to write them here as I see them. 23-12-2009
The Big Chill
So this movie is basically a bunch of people talking about what went wrong in their lives in unnaturally philosophical ways with a great soundtrack, but it's a cultural touchstone, so it obviously captured something about the people about whom it was made (that was a terrible sentence, I apologise.) I know my father loves it, and we listened to the soundtrack all the time when I was a kid - this was released the year I was born. It has a pretty decent ensemble cast but they're not all equally good - William Hurt and Mary Kay Place stood out, particularly William Hurt. I spent a lot of the time when JoBeth Williams and Tom Berenger were boring me to death on screen together wishing I were watching Hurt instead. Glenn Close was good, too - I would've liked to see more of her, I felt as though she was given the shortest shrift in the movie. It was nice seeing Kevin Kline in a quieter supporting role, seeing what he can do without showing off. It's enjoyable and watchable, in spite of large doses of cheese. I'm also really rather hoping I don't end up as Mary Kay Place in this movie, even if she was lovely in it. I think it would benefit from a little trimming, but it was watchable.
