Sherlock Holmes
Look, I'm not coming at this as a Sherlock Holmes purist. I've read a few of the stories, I've seen an adaptation or two, but it's not my favourite thing in the world. I LOVED this movie. I think it's the best thing Guy Ritchie's done in years - it's so much fun, it looks great, and the plot is a little silly but actually wraps up nicely enough. Mostly, though, I am madly and wildly in love with Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Almost as much as they are with each other (at one point, Watson's fiancee actually says "you care about him as much as I do"). They flirt and banter and manhandle each other all the way through the movie, it's fantastic. RDJ does a great, flawed, sympathetic Holmes with those puppy-dog eyes of his and his antics against Watson's fiancee, Mary, and Jude Law is the best I've seen him in years - he has so much energy as Watson, and some great lines. Their camaraderie and chemistry are palpable, the relationship is so believable. Also, Holmes is up there with Tony Stark in terms of hotness from RDJ. Rachel McAdams feels a bit shoehorned in, but she's lovely in it. The only real disappointment in casting was Kelly Reilly as Mary, who could actually have been pretty cool but fell kind of flat. Still, if you're up for a bit of homoerotic tension between lovely boys in period costumes who do some great slow-motion fighting in between (and THANK YOU, Guy Ritchie, for NOT using hand-held in the fight scenes! They were great!) then this is an awesome summer action movie.
