21. How has the HP fandom connected you to other fandoms, interests, or people?


You know what, I think that of all my fandoms, Harry Potter is the one that has had the least impact on other things I am interested in. However, I first read Lord of the Rings (in high school) when one of my teachers informed me that I absolutely could not profess to love Harry Potter if I hadn't read LotR. I love the Harry Potter books more, and it is my all time #1 fandom, but the Lord of the Rings movies are infinitely better than the HP ones (and every other movie, ever).

Interests...there are interests other than fandom?

People are a whole different story. The first few months after I met melissajane14 we bonded over Harry Potter. I have met lots of people with whom I have shared my love of Potter and it has made me like them more, both in real life and online, including my LJ braintwin truffle_shuffle and the always amazing ack_attack. I know very few people who have never read Harry Potter (which is at least partly because I lend Philosopher's Stone to nearly everyone I make an acquaintance with who professes not to have read them.) I am still at least mostly convinced that people who don't love Harry Potter don't have a soul (see: baldie_troll, entwashian). It's also usually something I can talk to everyone, kids and adults, about.
