The writing of Ron. The writing of the trio. The writing of Dumbledore. The insistence of the filmmakers on cutting out anything of emotional value or character development in favour of hitting every plot moment, but then screwing that up anyway. The way they take the characters' best lines and either excise them or give them to the wrong character. Mostly, though, none of the movies except for Prisoner of Azkaban actually works as a movie. They're collections of scene committed to film that lack cohesion.

Also, for something we can't blame on Kloves, Snape's Worst Memory.

See, I really disliked Prisoner of Azkaban as an adaptation because it missed out so much that I felt was important like who the Marauders actually were and some of the Snape stuff. I actually asked a number of people who I knew hadn't read the books if they'd followed the Marauders map stuff and most of them hadn't. Instead it was more important to repeatedly show the Whomping Willow. Saying that, at least I remember that movie. I can't even think of any of Order of the Phoenix and I've yet to watch HBP on film because, well, I'm just not impressed by the movies (and I didn't have any money when it came out at the cinema so I didn't see it then).

I don't think it's a perfect movie, it still has the same problems of being adapted by Kloves - character assassination, lack of explanation, line-stealing - but I think Cuaron as a director gave it a unique tone and cohesion that the other films lack. It all feels like one movie, it looks like one movie, there is a theme that carries through it. I think that's pretty impressive, all things considered.

I don't think PoA completely works as a movie because I saw it in theaters with friends that hadn't read the books and afterwards I had to explain everything about the Marauders. There's no explanation about the map or why Harry's patronus is a stag.
What's so frustrating about the movies in general is that it feels like it was easy to get it right sometimes and they just went in another direction for no reason.

Yeah, it still has all the problems that come from being adapted by Steve Kloves, but I still think it's a more cohesive and stronger movie than any of the others. Basically, Cuaron did the best he could with Kloves's rubbishy script.

Ugh, absolutely. The books are so cinematic, it would be EASY to make good adaptations, surely.

I agree! as to the comments above. I actually don't think that explaining who the Marauders are or why Harry's patronus is a stag is important for the main-story.

I...well, I think they should be explained, because people walk away from the movie with no idea what has happened. Having said that, it's still the best of the movies - Cuaron did a good job with a stupid script.

Oh GOD, I so agree with you on all of the above. I want to douse Kloves in gasoline and light a match, so help me. And POA is the only one of the films I have real respect for, too. Bless Cuaron.

Yeah, I think he did the best job with the script available. I also think it's interesting that he actually changed a few things from the original movies that have managed to stick right through. Also, PoA has such a gorgeous, unique visual style - you can tell, just looking at a cap, that it's from PoA.
