On September 28th I watched Strangers on a Train

This was so not the movie that I thought it was, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed that it wasn't. I was expecting something a little greyer, a little darker, and I ended up really not liking the tennis player who was stuck with a madman who murdered his wife - an action nobody seems to be remotely upset about other than that it's illegal. I actually felt really bad for the wife - she wasn't exactly a stellar person, she got herself knocked up by another man and was planning on using the baby against her husband - but look, he married her in the first place and then had an affair as well. It struck me as quite a misogynistic movie, and I found myself really sympathising with her when she was out having a good time and we knew she was going to be murdered. After that scene, I became somewhat frustrated with the movie. Seriously, NOBODY cares that this woman was STRANGLED TO DEATH. They only care about the consequences for her husband if it turned out he killed her. It's Hitchcock, though, so of course it's filmed beautifully, the suspense is, duh, masterful, and there are some awesome concepts. I just don't think it's his best work, and I definitely found it inferior to Rope.

Today I watched Easy A

This movie was awesome. It's a great entry into the pantheon of teen movies. Emma Stone is a great emerging talent, and she made SUCH a likeable lead in this movie. It pays its dues to the movies that came before, referencing 80's John Hughes movies and actually working them into the script - which is perfect for a movie about the modern teenager, with a world of media at their fingertips and all the extra knowledge. I like the film's message about sexuality, too - it's not puritanical or negative and it's got, ultimately, a feminist message about taking control of your own sexuality. It takes on religion and righteousness with biting wit. Most of the adults are actually cool, particularly Olive's parents. The love interest was a bit bland and shoehorned in, though. Still, there were some genuinely hilarious scenes (I nearly died during the fake sex scene) and it's nice to see an atheist heroine in a Hollywood movie.

I loved Easy A too - it reminded me of Mean Girtls in that it was a smartly written teen comedy :) And I LOVE Dan Byrd, I wish he was in it more!
