You guys, you guys, I've figured it out: Starship is The Little Mermaid.

The mermaid/bug lives in world full of amazing things but wants to be human more than anything and spends all their time surrounded by human things. They fall in love with a dumb but pretty human whose life they saved, and then a rather large bad guy with too many legs comes along and sings a kick-ass baddie song and magics him/her into a human for their own twisted purposes. Blah blah blah death and destruction, the good guy almost-dies and transforms back into their original form. Sure, Ariel gets a slightly different ending from Bug, but Starkid weren't going to give up the opportunity for a gross interspecies make-out session. You've got Roach for Flounder in the cute animal sidekick stakes, and the Mosquito Brothers for Flotsam and Jetsam on the evil minion front, and the Queen vs. Triton as the initially controlling but ultimately supportive leader.

I Wanna Be = Part of Your World
Beauty = Under the Sea
The Way I Do = Kiss the Girl
Kick It Up a Notch = Poor Unfortunate Souls

I realise that it's hardly the first time this story has been done, but I felt like sharing this epiphany. Also, a movie review:

22nd May: Away We Go

Is there a more likeable actor than John Kransinski? I swear, every time I see his stupid face he makes me smile. I want one. This movie meanders all over the place and seems to be trying just that little bit too hard to be indie, perhaps because of its director's cred. It's cute, though. Maya Rudolph starts out prickly but has a nice character arc, JKras is just ridiculously adorable throughout, and the supporting characters range from brilliant and intriguing (Melanie Lynskey) to OTT caricature quirkiness (Maggie Gyllenhaal, stop breaking my heart in the bad way). A bit more focus would have made it good, but it's sweet.

3 out of 5

Working on Darren icons from the GQ shoot. Also, if you're an English Darren fan, he's doing a show. DON'T MISS OUT. I WOULD KILL TO GO. Not literally, of course. Unless you know of an opportunity. Just kidding.

Darren won AfterElton's Hot 100. I'm not surprised at all.

The Starkid guys actually said on multiple occasions that Starship is 'The Little Mermaid' meets 'Alien.' But I love the ending, like the fact Bug stayed a bug - the message of not having to change yourself to get your heart's desire is very, very meaningful to me.

I wasn't keeping up. I'm also not criticising at all, I was just thinking about the parallels in the car today :) I totally get it, Alien is the humans and The Little Mermaid is the bugs.

See, I just can't get past the bugs. I just watched Kick It Up a Notch again for Dylan's singing (SO much better in the YouTube vid than on the soundtrack), but the bugs still creep me the fuck out. So, yeah, don't change yourself, but my brain's just like BUGS.

Haha, you do recall that the poster has bugs on it right? Are drawn bugs more tolerable than the puppet ones?

The poster should be getting shipped tomorrow, I will let you know whether it actually does or not. Would you be interested in a couple of the Darren GQ pictures? I have an extra of the black tux with the ring and the white tux shot.

It's not so much the bugs, because the puppets aren't so bad, but they keep making really nasty bug jokes and...augh. I hate bugs, but I love Starkid.

YES PLEASE YOU ARE SO GOOD TO ME.

Just got done shipping the poster/magazine pages. I love that posters are so lightweight because it makes shipping overseas so much more bearable cost-wise.

I'm not surprised Darren made it on the Hot 100, but I didn't think he'd get the top spot.

I'm going to Darren's show on the 5th (still have a hard time believing that one!). The show on the 6th is very tempting as well. :)
I guess this means he'll be at the HP premiere on the 7th. I wonder if he'll wear his Gryffindor tie...

The gays love Darren. I'm basing this on a test group of two people, but it works for me.

IF YOU MEET HIM AND DO NOT RECOUNT EVERY SINGLE SECOND TO ME I MIGHT DIE.

I've already told my friends that they're absolutely not allowed to meet him when they go to America or I will kill them in their sleep out of jealousy. I am still SO bummed about not getting to go.

Yes, that's a perfectly acceptable sample size. /sarcasm

I WILL FLAIL AND TALK ABOUT IT AND FLAIL SOME MORE. And if I actually meet him face to face, I may never shut up about it. :D

Oh no! You're not going to the US this summer? I was looking forward to meeting you. *hugs*

I absolutely cannot afford it. I can't tell you how much this hurts me, but I really just can't.
