Which Extremity of the World Are You?
From the towering colossi at Rum and Monkey.
This looks incredibly spooky and cool and atmospheric. I'm usually not all that into horror trailers but I actually like this one.
Yesterday I watched The Whistleblower
The title really lets this one down a bit. I went in expecting the movie to be boring and political, but it's actually a very good thriller about a topical and important subject - the kidnapping and trafficking of women for the sex trade. This is a must-see for feminists. Rachel Weisz is blistering as a Nebraska (!) cop (her cop walk is fantastic, it sold me on her character in about half a second) who becomes a UN peacekeeper in Bosnia and uncovers the international involvement in their sex trade. The gender politics of the area are very disturbing, and it really show you how far we still have to go in terms of equality. Also, David Strathairn is cool (but whenever I hear his voice now I think of Dr. Rosen) and David Hewlett is in everything. Oh, and surprise! flirty!Benedict Cumberbatch will make some people happy.
The only thing that let the movie down for me is that we lose connection with the girls who are being trafficked about halfway through and don't catch up with them again for a while, which diffuses the tension too much. The supporting performances are pretty scattershot, too - some were good, some were bad. Overall it's a great movie, though.

Today I watched The Quiet Earth
This quiet little New Zealand scifi from the 80s (the technology will blow your MIND, man) is one I've heard tell of in this snobby film geek/scifi geek circles but doesn't seem to be widely known. It's about a guy who wakes up one morning completely alone in the world - everyone has literally just vanished in the middle of whatever they were doing. For the full first third of the movie, Zac slowly breaks down as the need for human contact gets too great to bear. The scene where he becomes the president of cardboard celebrities in a stolen mansion wearing a woman's nightgown is pretty brilliant. Then a woman finds him, they find a Maori man, and the three of them try to work out how to be the last three human beings on Earth.
For me, the problems with the movie started as soon as the girl was introduced. She's beautiful and a little bit wacky and she sleeps with both men because That's What Women Do. I'm sure they were trying to draw grand parallels about interactions between women and men since the dawn of time but I found myself really irritated with the way they treated those issues, especially after the interesting way they examined the condition of loneliness. The music was great, though, and while the ending was a bit OTT I liked the reveal of how the three of them survived the event that took every other living being on Earth.
