I'm being Baader-Meinhoffed by Alan Ruck again. He does that a lot. I think he's stalking me via his body of work.

I forgot to review movies.

On Sunday I watched The Pajama Game

The Pajama Game made me see what so many other people dislike in musicals. I still liked it, because hell, Doris Day singing and dancing is worthwhile any day of the week for me. Still, this movie...is a LOT of singing, often in situations that don't seem to warrant it, as well as making light of things that really, really aren't funny (a guy trying to stab his girlfriend out of jealousy) and it's a musical about, of all things, corporate-union relations.

I don't know how it worked on stage - it does, of course, have one number that is shot really strangely in the musical tradition of making use of the visual opportunities film offers in the weirdest of ways. A lot of the action is limited to a couple of locations, so the transition from stage to screen could have been smoother.

Positive things: Doris Day is always radiant, and her voice is just amazing. The guy has a good voice too, and there are a few really cute and impressive numbers. Bob Fosse choreographed, which is always good. It also has a wide variety of body types, a lot of different kinds of people, all of whom are treated as real (and often sexual) people without making fun of them regardless of age or physical appearance. Day plays the head of the grievance committee and she's absolutely dedicated and tough, so it's not bad on that front from a feminist perspective. Also, just between this and Timecop, I miss when movies were short. They're both about an hour and a half. Movies now are always about two and a half hours.

Also Timecop

Obviously I wasn't expecting this to be cinematic genius. As an action scifi it's passable. It has some great kickboxing fight scenes (it's so convenient how there are so many opportunites for a roundhouse kick to the head) and a plot that makes no sense but provides for a decent amount of tension. I mean, it's blindingly obvious what's going to happen all the time, but you know, it's fun. There was some potential for interesting interactions between JCVD and a female mole bad guy for a second, but they decided against actually utilising it. There's also a brilliantly stupid moment of special effects that comes out of nowhere. It's kind of a shame Mia Sara was never used to her full potential. She's completely wasted in this, of course. I do want to rewatch Ferris Bueller now, though.

If you're yearning to see JCVD do the splits on a kitchen bench in his underwear, this is your movie!
