Still unemployed. Sigh.
Two movies today.
True Grit
I was honestly expecting more from this movie. I love the Coen brothers, but they can be hit and miss. I just felt like this was a little too quirky for the tone, like a serious Western with weird bits. Hailee Steinfeld put in an absolutely stellar performance as Mattie Ross, the 14-year-old girl who hires a Marshal to track her father's killer, but I thought Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon were way overdoing it as two Marshals. Jeff Bridges was better as Rooster Cogburn, but they were both less impressive than I've seen them. Fabulous facial hair abounded, and the movie looked amazing. I could almost smell the old West. It smelled bad. There were little things that made the movie feel real - the bad teeth, the particular speech patterns - but some of the behaviour seemed almost too silly, particularly from Rooster Cogburn. Barry Pepper was fabulous as Lucky Ned.
Also, the Coens seem really into their unclear endings these days.

Ultraviolet
LOL. I don't know if so-bad-it's-good really counts as a genre, but this is definitely so bad it's entertaining. Does anyone know what the plot of this movie actually was? I'm pretty sure the people in it didn't. The word "vampire" is mentioned once and people have fangs but they don't seem to actually, you know, suck blood or anything. They have some sort of HIV-metaphor virus instead. The sets look fantastic but the stunts are stupid, and Milla Jovovich is weirdly blurry and possible glowing, in a radioactive way, throughout the film. It's not even shot well, and the most interesting part of the story is told via expositional flashbacks in the first five minutes. The only person in the whole thing who can act is William Fichtner (which, why is he in this movie at all?!?) It really is a bad movie.
