Today was really good.

I had work this morning, a crossover with Kathy, so we figured out what we were doing differently and discussed Luke's behaviour and the merits of old Playschool vs. new Playschool, which was fun. I've had the hiccups almost all day *sigh* I had coffee with Nutty straight after work which became lunch and he bought me:
A Treebeard action figure
The Harry Potter PoA art calendar and
The Beatles "1" CD
to make up for not buying me a birthday present last birthday or coming to either of the previous ones :p and it also made up for the fact that he then made me shop for clothes and (ugh) shoes with him for about an hour after that. I hate clothes shopping. It was cool hanging out with him though.

Yesterday I went to get my new glasses sorted, I will have them by next week or the week after. Yay!

GOONIES

Some basic info on the film: The Goonies is a kids' adventure film made in 1985 starring Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Josh Brolin among others, directed by Dick Donner, written by Chris Columbus (director of the first two Harry Potter films) and produced by Stephen Spielburg (though for the number of errors left in the film you'd never know it.) Talk about when fandoms collide. The basic plot follows a bunch of kids living on the goon docks whose homes are about to be torn down to make way for a golf course. They find a treasuer map and set off to find pirate treasure.
I first saw it when I was really young but by the time I was a teenager all I could remember about it was that there was a pirate with his eyes in different places (which is in fact not entirely the case.) I rediscovered it as a teenager living in Japan - while looking for videos to watch with my sister in a country with almost no rating system I found a cover that looked harmless enough.

These kids act like really twelve and fourteen year olds. They swear and talk over each other and make mistakes. This is also a film that borders on fantasy, a great adventure story and absolutely the most fun (even if there are a hundred very obvious errors such as Data referring to the giant octopus that was cut from the movie or Sean calling his big brother by the actor's name instead of the character's.) It's funny and exciting and Sean is just painfully cute. It's also got some darker parts, including an abused man called Sloth. It all balances well, the kids are terrific and believable and that pirate ship set was amazing. Also great is the commentary on the DVD, when all the actors get together as adults. Each of the characters of the kids resonates (though some of the adults are surprisingly awful.) It's a cult classic. I love this movie so much!

Here are some pics:

Money shot!

The reaction on most of the kids' faces was real, because it was the first time they'd seen the pirate ship - except Corey and Sean, if you believe what Corey said on the commentary!

The pirate ship itself. It's a SET, people. The whole thing. No CG at all.

And as they are now:

Ke and Sean are hot.

The only Goonies community I've found is [livejournal.com profile] goonies, and there aren't a lot of good sites out there. There's a few cap sets at [livejournal.com profile] cap_it, and you can find the IMDb entry here. And there are still rumours of a sequel after all this time.

Links are above, and I do have one more pic for you today:
