For anyone on my Flist who has a website: what kind of feedback system (tagboard/guestbook etc.) do you use? Do you find it to be effective? Do you run a forum, and if so how much work does that take?
While I still had my site, I used a guestbook but I also had a feedback form which is rather handy. It just involves a basic php or java script forwarding contents to your email.
Forum = lots and lots and lots and lots of work but totally worth it. Just have a support system - I have great mods - who understand that sometimes I just have to get away [it stresses me out muchly from time to time] and keep the place in order till I get back.
I used to do a guestbook but I took it down because it seemed more about me than Dom, which isn't what the site is for. If someone has something important enough to say they can email me.
Well, if you do a forum, starting out it would probably be ok with just you. But as it grows and demands more of your time, definitely important to have mods. If you're looking for an off-site host I do recommend ezboard. A lot of people hate them but honestly I've had minimal problems considering their size. And since at that time I had no clue how to set one up, it made it easy doing everything for me. If your site grows really really large though, ezboard is expensive. The first time I purchased gold community status it was $14, now it runs over $200 for 6 months which is why we'll be moving on-site soon.
Depends on what kind of forum and whether you mean time to get it to work or time when it's actually online... and if you install in on your own server or use one of these free services .... I use both.... and email of course.
I have an email thing at the entry page, that's it. I get almost NIL feedback from the site, nor do I have a site metre. On the other hand I suspect some of the lj comments are flow-ons from the site. It's still definitely worth it to maintain the site.
Your site's got a bit of a different idea to mine, though. I used to have a fanfiction site (as you well know) and all I had there was my e-mail address, I almost never got feedback. But on the Naveen-Andrews.net there should be somewhere for people to talk about the new pictures or what he's up to or something, I think.
It should come as no surprise that I get most of my feedback regarding the fansite I have for Burky from the 'Lage :) Whenever I update, I post a note on the LB and on the Babes thread. I've gotten good positive feedback in those places.
As for a forum, I have no plans to add one. I have two email address links for the site: my admin address and a separate one for the fan club. I get the most emails from the fanclub address -- people asking to join the fan club and saying nice things about my site and Burky. And even though I claim no affiliation to Burky, I have gotten messages from my admin address regarding his recent news coverage and I even got a message from somebody who went to college with him.
The main purpose for me when I made the site was to make it respectful of the person, which includes not posting anything related to his private life. Because of that, I have heard from the man personally and he has been very grateful. Just something to keep in mind ;)
Our sites so small no one really ever comes by, but we get comments from time to time. We've currently have a yahoo group, but I'm thinking about making a lj group...

Tagboards are the devil.
