Going through other people's Shag Memes, I have discovered that I am a celebrity whore.

I don't know whether or not I think this is a bad thing. Meanwhile, Neal left today, and while I won't miss him and Clare tearing the place apart (and Clare's rotten attitude since he's been here) I will miss him while he buggers off to England for two years.

Looked at cars this morning, found a really cute silver Mazda but it was about $8000 dollars, which is kind of high if it's going to be my car. Also had work.

So apparently the new Pope was a Nazi. On top of the homophobia, not believing in condoms as a cure for AIDS and wanting a DIMINISHED role for women in the church. Because you know, it's not small enough already. Clearly, women only exist to breed. With NO CONTRACEPTION WHATSOEVER.
Just call me Babymaker 3000.

The things he's being hailed for appear to be such issues as bringing Europe together as one Catholic group. Apparently the fact that so many people aren't Catholic is a real problem. And he also (apparently) has quite strong feelings of damnation vs. salvation. Seriously, if this is the case, consider me damned to hell, because I'd rather be there than in a heaven full of Catholic heavyweights.

I honestly think my two biggest issues with the church are homophobia and AIDS in Africa. Not that any of it affects me directly, but there are MILLIONS of African Catholics going "Oh well, the Pope says I can't use contraception, so I guess I'll just go out and contract AIDS and die." My mother informed me this afternoon that the reasoning behind the church's dislike of contraception is that it kills life (from which point on I had "Every sperm is sacred" stuck in my head non-stop.) Seriously, in Africa, NOT USING CONTRACEPTION IS KILLING LIFE. Every fucking day. They don't have access to the meds once they GET AIDS, so what does the Catholic Church propose as a cure for AIDS? Abstenance won't work, people are getting married when they already have it.

As for homophobia, there isn't any reason for it in the Bible, not really. Not if you take a modern approach to reading the Bible (even by the Church's standards.) It's not as though the Catholic church still supports stoning people to death if they've disrespected their parents. There isn't even a definite stand against homosexuals in the Bible.

Finally, my readings of the Bible as a kid seemed to be geared towards the idea that Jesus loves us all, and that we need to accept and love everyone for who they are. I can't think of a message LESS well represented by the Catholic church.

Please note: the above was not a condemnation of Catholics or Christians of any kind. It's an attack on the Church as it currently stands.

What with this and the gun control thread I was just reading and the thread below I'm about ready to give up on the world right now.

Another reason to never move to Texas. As if there aren't enough of those already.

Pics of the Day. New Naveen, the picture I asked for in the last post, and some boytouching celebs off my computer.

yeah that's what I was talking about with my friends last night... I don't think that Catholic people in Europe or North America for instance will necessarily do everything the Pope says, and there are less and less religious people there... but in Africa for instance, religion spreads and that's where the AIDS issue is the worst... telling people not to use condoms is... argh can't find an appropriate word.

the New Zealand pic is priceless, thank you!

I know, that's the problem. They need to EDUCATE people, not keep them under the thumb of the Church.

Glad you like it!

i wont claim to be the worlds leading authority on papal business, but having an ex-hitler youth as pope? its a bit...fucked up. the whole AIDS thing is WRONG. i've just finished writing an essay on the AIDS pandemic for geography, and after seeing the figures and pictures, its hideously stupid and wrong to NOT allow condoms there.

mmmpicspams.

I know. Even if he didn't have a choice it still seems rather wrong to me.

You know, I really like that icon I made for you. Her face looks great in it.

Amen sista! Everything you said about the pope is spot on. That guy is a bigot and frankly a cancer to society. I love how this planet is going backwards rather than forwards in it's quest for equality. It's enough to make me sick to my stomach. It's enough to make me sad to be human. Or, to go the other route and to become a full-on activist. Which is what we all should do.

I'm taking this massive road trip this summer, and have had to come up with creative ways to avoid Texas while still going to places like New Orleans. We're taking the long way 'round.

And lastly, I'm not sure that's Balthazar Getty in those pictures with Jared Leto. At least, he doesn't look the way I remember Balthazar looking...

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

It IS, equality was improving for years and now neo-Conservatism has taken over. I think we're devolving as a species, honestly, and it's completely embarassing.

New Orleans! I've always wanted to go there.

Aha. For once I can honestly tell you I am 90% sure that's Balthazar Getty in the pictures. He plays the title character in the movie and the site I got the pics from (Jared Leto Media) said it was him.

From: [identity profile] beannis.livejournal.com

That's so not Balthazar Getty, I had the hots for him when I was like 12. Unless he got a bunch of plastic surgery. This is Balthazar (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/1744/Events/1744/BalthazarG_Grani_703381_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Getty,%20Balthazar).

But mmmm prettyboystouchingyumminess.

Hi, me again, it looks more like this dude, who is also in the movie.

Danny Comden (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/2723/Events/2723/DannyComde_Fred_4238060_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Comden,%20Danny)

I agree with everything you said about the pope. I'm not catholic so i don't really know if I should have any say or not but honestly, there were much much better choices for the position. Men who would have had a great effect on this world.

But they picked him, the one that is going to make the religious situation on this planet even worse.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Good thing about the new pope: he's 78.

He's going to die soon.

From: [identity profile] melissajane14.livejournal.com

found a really cute silver Mazda

Like mine!! They are expensive but Mazdas are Japanese and the Japanese make good cars that last longer and require fewer replacement parts than Australian cars. Also if you get a really cheap car there is a strong possibility it will spend much time off the road being fixed and you risk it breaking down, which is not what you want when you are on the Tuggeranong Parkway at 11pm.

In more serious matters I agree with you about the new pope.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

We're not doing the loan thing now, definitely going for the "Mum's car" option.

From: [identity profile] king-avellmon.livejournal.com

Being 78, he'll likely die within a few years... and maybe the cardinals will then understand the only way to keep church attendance stable is to actually accept social changes that occurred fifty years ago. I can't believe a pope would find using condoms "killing" when no life even exists yet. How is it "murder" when there is nothing to murder? Honestly -- he must think the world should abide by the morals taught during the nineteenth century, and it is going to be impossible to achieve such. His stance on using condoms to prevent AIDS is highly disappointing.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Well, some people believe that it's preventing life that could exist (every sperm is sacred!)

The AIDS issue is the most contentious one for me - it's not as if I actually expect their attitudes on homosexuality and women to change but telling people not to use contraception in Africa is like murder.

Thankyou! I just LOVE Paul Bettany's Chaucer, it's the only reason I've seen that movie 2087187524 times. Every speech he gives makes me tingle.

lol yes!!! I love A Knights Tale more than life itself. It started my Heath obsession... well that and 10 Things... :D

Good thing about the new pope: he's 78.

Well, he did choose the name Benedict XVI. Benedict XV had a very short reign as well, during the beginnings of World War I. I think John Paul II did a very good job of ensuring that his policies--most of Ratzinger's policies are from JPII's own way of running things--are still kept in place, even after he died.

I still don't think that any momentous change is going to happen in the Catholic Church even if Ratzinger dies, since a big chunk of the members of the college of cardinals were put there by JPII (gawd, I feel like I'm typing in a wrestler's name). It's only now that he's dead can you really fully appreciate the Machiavellian machinations JPII did while he was in power.

As for Ratzinger being Hitler Youth...I find it perversely funny that John Paull II, who hid from the Nazi's during the war, would be succeded by one. XD
