Well, I've read it.

That was quite an experience. I was bang on with my estimate of it taking 7 hours, by the way - it took me 6 hours 58 minutes. I've been saying for ages that Dumbledore was going to go soon. I have the oddest feeling that he wanted Snape to kill him, you know. The whole thing about Snape was interesting - I knew once Harry started reading the book that it had belonged to Snape. So, is he a bad guy or a good guy? What about Malfoy? I get the feeling that Snape was protecting Malfoy just as Dumbledore had protected Harry. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it, and Snape is just a bad guy.

The majority of the book didn't feel as dark as I'd expected, to be honest. It all felt very much like the calm before the storm. There's a LOT of underlying sweetness to the whole thing, and a lot of humour in there as well. Harry seems to have really come into his own - I'm liking him more all the time. He's become the hero everybody wanted him to be, and not the disturbed boy he was in the last book.

The part at Spinner's End (spiders much?) with Cissy, Bella and Snape was fascinating in the extreme - so incredibly human, with such interesting characters.

Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny, hmm? No great surprises there. I reckon Harry will come back to Hogwarts - mostly because whatever happens, whatever great showdown occurs, I have the distinct feeling that it will happen there. Poor old Bill, though Phlegm (lmao) turned out to be pretty cool.

I just love Luna, seriously, how funny is she? Particularly her commentary on the Quidditch match. She's just such an awesome character. There were a lot of new names featured but this book had a very strong (almost Buffy-like and, while I'm at it, Chosen One?!?) focus on the four central characters - Buffy Harry, Xander Ron, Willow Hermione and Giles Dumbledore. Speaking of which, did anyone catch the name Proudfoot? Cute little LotR reference.

It did feel a bit like reading fanfiction, what with all the romance going on, which was somewhat strange.

I'm sure I'm going to have an awful lot more to say at a later date after reading everybody else's thoughts, but for now I'll leave it with this:

So. Who's R.A.B?

The cover's still butt ugly.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I...just read it. I started when I got my hands on it at 9:05 am and finished at 4:03 pm. I stopped to make myself lunch and to get the mail, but that's it. I even read it walking home.

From: [identity profile] magikalcrab.livejournal.com

HOLY SHIT and I thought that I read fast!!!!

I mean, if I really, really put my mind to it, I'll be finished by about midnight, so thats a pretty good effort, but on first reading, I want to take my time. *hides eyes from spoilers like WOAH*

From: [identity profile] seren-mahtori.livejournal.com

I've been reading for 2 hours and only got to page 105...of course it's almost 4am here now. I had drama before I could crack the book open. I'm liking it so far. Of course...they haven't even gotten to Diagon Alley yet for their school stuff.

I like Dumbledore much more in this book than before. I like when he's honest with Harry and trusting Harry. Harry needed that. And...I think I need sleep as the sentences are starting to blend together on the page.

Went to the Midnight Madness Potter Party here...sat in line for almost 5 hours. It was fun though...lots of things to keep you occupied. I think I'll do it again for the next book, but next time I'm going to pre-order the book and wear a costume!

I would have been upset about reading your post..but as someone had scanned page *606* and posted it online two days ago...I already knew. Boy was I disappointed when I got the book and flipped to that page only to see that it was indeed a real scan and not a fake.

anyway...g'night!

I started reading at 1:30 AM, and finished at 6:30 AM, and I just have no god damn idea what to make of any of it, I really really don't.

I think it's going to be a while before I can form an opinion at all.

I... think I liked it?

I have the oddest feeling that he wanted Snape to kill him, you know.
Me too. Me too! At least I think he wanted to be kille either by Draco or by Snape

get the feeling that Snape was protecting Malfoy just as Dumbledore had protected Harry
Me too. I think he just killed Dumbledore because of this vow in the beginning.... O.o I can´t believe he´s really the bad guy. But on the other side... nobody of the Order would believe Snape if he came back to them...

and yes.. It was like reading Fanfic *rofl* I think everybody got that feeling.

Could R.A.B. be Regulus Black? I don't know his middle name. I'm not that obsessed.

From: [identity profile] carencey77.livejournal.com

Well, if we're putting the spoilers here, cool!...Regulus Black is exactly what I came up with too, and Mundungus stealing stuff from the house might be an issue, 'specially if he's already stolen and sold what Harry wants to find! Went back to book 5, and AFAIK, his middle name wasn't given.

i kept thinking that Phlegm Fleur would be all shallow and dump Bill because he got bit, but i was wrong!
I noticed Proudfoot, its so gonna egg my mum on, she is sure that Harry Potter is a rip off of LOTR, but it doesnt stop her watch it
I was shocked when Dumbledore died, especially after he had just not died trying to get the Horcrux...it shocked me, but i thought it was good that Snape be the one that killed him...
I wanna know who R.A.B is too!!!

It feels a lot like reading fanfic when I'm reading HBP (not finished, 100 pages left now)...ah, gotta keep reading.

From: [identity profile] flamingo-killer.livejournal.com

I agree-it really felt a lot like reading fanfiction. There didn't seem to be much plot from about page 70-570. I don't think enough people took Dumbledore's death seriously enough. I mean, everyone turned out to the funeral, but people were talking, cracking jokes, etc.

I'm still trying to find an excuse for Snape. I have many theories, each less likely than the last.

It's weird. Every thing I had predicted-who died, who the half blood prince was, who would hook up--came true (except Ron and Lavender. That annoying bit of story came a bit out of left field. I really wanted to shoot myself then, but then again, it was about 3 in the morning then having not gotten any sleep the previous night, and I'm now dead on my feet, so maybe on a second read I will tolerate it better).

Also, Remus and Tonks? WHAT. Did everyone's hormones burst into life in this book?

Like I said above, my only take on R.A.B. is Regulus.

I'm still debating my overall take on it. I think I like it. I need to read it again.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I don't think that's true at all. I think they took the death very seriously. You can see in Harry that he feels torn when he laughs, it's pretty normal. I thought it was handled well (even though I wasn't that distraught about it, because I've been thinking he was going to die for ages.)

I'm still thinking about Snape too. And I liked the Ron & Lavender bit, it seemed very realistic - Ron was desperate.

I KNOW. What is it, springtime in Harry Potter land?

From: [identity profile] flamingo-killer.livejournal.com

I guess I can't really articulate what I mean about the funeral. It was mostly because (well, it appeared to me that) people didn't really understand the gravity of his death completely. Obviously, some people do, like Harry, while others who don't know what Harry has in store for him can't possibly fathom how difficult this task is going to be without Dumbledore and his guidance. Though throughout HBP Harry proved that he has matured significantly and has found the ability to confide in others and rise to the occasion, with now adult or parent figure in his life, he may find more difficulty in achieving his goal of finding and destroying each piece of Voldemort's soul. I guess that's what I mean. Obviously people take his death as a huge blow, but they don't fully understand the real loss for Harry and his quest. I also was 99.9% postive he would die in the book, so it wasn't a surprise. I guess the true surprise was the person who cursed him.

I agree that Ron/Lavender was realistic because Ron was desperate, but it surprised me that she would like him. She often appeared so scandalized by him in classes like Divination and sorts, though to her, looks seem to be most everything, and from descriptions in the book Ron appearts to have matured, like Harry, quite a bit. I just was disappointed in his attitude towards Hermione and how he released his...I dunno, jealousy, almost. This is the part of the book I want to reread most, because I remember next to none of it and I was getting highly irratated while reading it simply because I was so exhausted.

WOAH long comment. SORRY!!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Lavender having a crush on Ron wasn't *that* unexpected, and I think the reason Ron went to her is because he and Hermione keep avoiding actually going for each other - to be honest, I think Ron got sick of waiting to kiss her, and his fight with Ginny just reinforced that in his mind. He was frustrated and he wanted to prove himself.

Ooh. OOTP, American hardcover edition, p. 116..."a heavy locket that none of them could open" is among the stuff found and thrown into the rubbish bag by Sirius. Of course, if it was thrown out, probably not THAT locket. But still. :)

Hey,
I'm no where near finished it yet but I skip parts and read the middle. I can't wait till I'm finished.

I LOVED it. Those three are such deeply interesting characters. ANd Wormtail! Weird.

From: [identity profile] overloved.livejournal.com

i hate all those people, but i like that i don't have to hate 1dimensional characters.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I don't hate any of them except Wormtail, who is a sneaky rat fink and deserves everything he gets.
