A lot of people don't get fandom. They don't understand how we can care so much about something, be so totally devoted to a film or a book or a TV show that we would do things they consider embarassing to show our support and become involved in something we admire.

On the weekend, for about 10 minutes, I was seriously considering buying a plane ticket to Melbourne to depart in 2 hours time just so I could try to get into a preview screening of Brokeback Mountain. I was just telling that story to [livejournal.com profile] king_avellmon and I decided this must be what love feels like. I've never been in love, not with a person, but I think I've been in love with movies. I think I'm in love with Lord of the Rings (maybe even the cast), and Firefly, and Brokeback Mountain. If that makes me weird or geeky or pathetic, so be it. You know what? It's never going to disappoint me.

Oh, and my birthday was great! I had a lovely and very healthy lunch of chips and caked with my friends and a birthday dinner of salmon and cake with my family. I LOVE CAKE. I bought DVDs and Tom and Nina stole me a street sign (Sirius Place) and Kathy bought me Revenge of the Sith so I can perv at Hayden and Ewan and play the "You were my brother! I loved you!" line repeatedly and pretend the rest of the movie never existed. I also bought Pulp Fiction & Wonder Boys and received the Indiana Jones boxset and THE LOST BOYS (OMG YAY!), so it was a very DVD-centric birthday. I bumped into [livejournal.com profile] ritergirl working at the DVD store and she looks great. I did have to work, but it was okay, and Oscar gave me a piece of paper folded in half that said "Happy Birthday" on it XD So yeah, lovely day, thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes!

ETA: OMG COULD IT BE TRUE? Possible BEST NEWS EVER!

I used to hide my fandom because people didn't get it. Now? Now I just say "If I'm a geek for something so be it. At least it shows I *can* be passionate about something, which is better then not being passionate about anything."
Just go with it I say :-)

I'm glad you had a great birthday.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I'm starting to think that geeks are like gay people. At least in terms of coming out, and the fact that some people are able to hide it and others can't. I mean, I was always a geek. I was never given the option of hiding it really. Even now people barely meet me and they'll find out I'm a fangirl within ten minutes. I tend to be introduced as "Katie, that Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings/whatever fan I told you about."

From: [identity profile] thumbaleena.livejournal.com

hehe. And if someone is closed minded enough to not wanna know you based on the fact .. then they aren't worth knowing anyway. Don't you think?

Oh, this icon has the best story behind it! [livejournal.com profile] minyafalas was in my journal comments and we were chatting about My Chemical Romance's guitarists' different style and she summed it up:
Mikey just kinda stands there and is like, "Nice weather we're having today, isn't it? Fancy a cup of tea?" and Frank's like, "FUCK YEAH! SHOW ME THE TEA BITCH! ROOOOOOOARRRRR!"

And then [livejournal.com profile] _jamjar saw it and LOVED it and she wanted icons of it, so I made two - one of Mikey with "Fancy a cup of tea?" and this one.

::Giggles:: I've just recently got into MCR, thanks to some friends. Mikey's cute. Frank's cute. Gee is cute and .. you know I *do* like their music too, lmao.

From: [identity profile] olafandyjon.livejournal.com

Oh yeah...may you find a giant, wrapped up present with Dave Grohl inside!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LMAO I haven't heard that particular one before - I have been wished several Doms and hobbits, a couple Jakes, Maggies and Naveens, but never a Dave Grohl - thankyou so much!

I get what you mean about fandom. I wrote something similar to this right before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price came out and it was actually published in my local newspaper. It's always nice to find people who understand fandom and what it means to you, especially when your parents or friends just don't get it.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Yes, only you put it much better than I ever could have :) I agree, it's good to find people you can connect with on that level.

I think a lot of other people have very similar 'obsessions' that they don't really see as obsessions. My father LOVES Japan. He has been posted there twice and of course is surrounded by other foreigners who love Japan there, and he makes friends with them. I try to tell him it's the same sort of thing but he's still convinced that I'm wasting my money whereas he's improving his life with his obsession.

Wonderful news about VM!!

Glad you had a great day!! :D

From: [identity profile] truffle-shuffle.livejournal.com

People don't get my obsessions either. They think that at my age I should have grown out of it by now. But you know, my entire life I've been obsessed with something intensely until the next obsession comes along. It's just who I am. It's possibly a scorpio thing...y'think? And I totally understand what you mean by feeling like you're in love with a movie or a book or whatever. I feel that way about Harry Potter, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Garden State...I could go on.

And speaking of Veronica Mars, I can't wait to hear what you think about it. I took a complete chance on it when I bought the season 1 boxset, based solely on people's opinions that I trust (Joss being one of them) and I completely fell in love with it. It's such a fantastic show, and I haven't really been talking about it in my journal because of lack of having a computer for a month, but it'll happen, trust me. The show's just perfect.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I don't know, I think there's a lot of non-Scorpions out there who would disagree with you. And [livejournal.com profile] tuatha_de is a Scorpion and doesn't have an addictive/obsessive personality.
It really is such a strong, passionate feeling. And at certain times (release of a new book/movie, the build-up to a new one, a new episode) you just *cannot* stop thinking about it.

I actually tried to preorder Veronica Mars on DVD from Amazon.com based on the strength of Joss's convictions (everybody else raved about it, but once Joss loved it I knew I had to try it. I mean, he loves Dude, Where's My Car...) I cannot WAIT to see it. At this point I have seen...3 minutes of the first episode, I think. LOL.

I hid my fandom from people for a time, but then I decided that it was better to, well, "come out of the closet" and tell people. And now I've brought a lot of people I know into my fandoms, which is great.
I'm glad you had a nice birthday! :D

From: [identity profile] hobbitofkobol.livejournal.com

ditto that
I used to hide a part of my fandoms from some people but now I don't care, I'm crazy about [insert fandom here] and I like it!
and now when people have a question about one of my fandoms they're happy to have me to answer them lol

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

As I've said above, I think that some people are able to hide their obsessions and some aren't. By the time I was 3 years of age I was so obsessed with Singin' in the Rain that I would watch it daily, new all the steps and songs and would sing it dancing down the street with an umbrella when it wasn't raining. I know all kids do that, but it just never went away with me, so it's never particularly surprised anyone in my life.

I still love Singin' in the Rain.

Thanks!

From: [identity profile] solitaryrain.livejournal.com

(I know this is a little off topic, but I adore Singing in the Rain too. :D)

From: [identity profile] hobbitofkobol.livejournal.com

omg this is so true... I have friends who have fandoms and who understand me, and I understand them, even if we have different fandoms. But we understand being a fan. We undertand our mutual obsessions. Now I also know some people who find our obsessions futile (if this is a word in English) and really don't understand our passion for a "useless" thing or persons we don't know. But hey, being fan does not mean we're stupid. It means we are capable of love and passion. And it does not mean we don't like "reality" either. I feel the same love to my family and my friends.

*dreams about the SW scene*

oh yay Indiana Jones boxset! I want one of those! *sings Indiana Jones theme*

Happy Birthday again, it's still the 15th here ;-)

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I think I'm lucky in that I have very understanding friends - most of them get the fandom thing even if they don't have the same feelings themselves. You sort of have to to understand me. But yeah, a lot of people think you have to be removed from reality to be a fan. It's not the case.

Thankyou!

OMG, there was a preview of Brokeback Mountain! I probably would have considered flying to Melbourne as well.

About a year ago I flew myself and Anthony to Brisbane and paid for accomodation for one night just to see a band. It was one of the best things ever.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LOL I'm gonna point out that you didn't book the flight 2 hours before it was due to leave just based on a chance that you would be able to get in, though. If I'd had more time I almost certainly would have done it.

If there's a preview in Sydney I'm *there*.
