Okay, here we go with Tutorial 1.
We are going to turn this image into this:

First I picked an image that had nice big bright eyes I could work with, and settled on this one of Emilie de Ravin:

So, now the hard part's done! LOL. I cropped it to a base:

Next step was to make a nice crisp clear base by duplicating the base three times and sharpening it each time. The first new layer is set to multiply, the second to screen, and the third to soft light:

I decided this was too dark and not contrasted enough (I'm going to make it black & white, so it needs a lot of contrast), so I set the multiply layer to 37%, then added another Soft Light layer to the top:

I decided I liked that base. Then I added a layer above the top layer, filled it with black and set it to "Color":

Then I erased the area over her eye:

But as you can see, the difference is hardly even visible. So I took a colour from her eyes using the eyedropper tool, created a new layer, painted over her eye and set the layer to soft light to get this:

I thought the image was a bit too sharp so I merged all the layers and used the blur tool on Emilie's cheek, chin, forehead and nose, being careful to stick to the skin:

Then I took this brush (I can't remember who made it, but they're more likely than not credited in my userinfo):

on a green background (again, a colour selected from her eye with the eyedropper tool) and cropped it so that there was just a line border at the right of the icon:

and I added a 2 pixel line next to that to separate it from the main picture and make it look better:

Then I created a new layer and used this text brush by
firithel_icons:

to get this:

but it didn't stand out enough, so I copy & pasted the layer, then went to Image -> Adjust -> Invert to get an identical layer in white, which I moved so that the black layer created a shadow under it:

And voila! You have a new icon :D
Also, GIP by
teh_indy. Best face EVER.
Hope you found that illuminating.

BTW... forgot to put my hand up and say YES! yesterday when you asked who wanted a tutorial - which is embarassing because I think I'm the one who prompted it!
So... gonna look at this when I get home - and thank you. *S*
*takes a quick look*
So THAT is what people mean by a "brush" - well, you cleared up one mystery for me! *G*
But, I still need to learn to use layers. I come to adobe photoshop as a photographer, so I quickly learned how to crop, size, brighten, contrast, etc. Somewhere along the line I learned how to add text and use a clone stamp. But I never got the hang of layers. But I bought a book and will learn.
