Welcome to Icon Tutorial 2, where we turn this gorgeous Yunjin Kim picture into this:

I would like to point out that I originally used a tutorial from here that appears to have vanished.
I started with this:

Then I cropped it and did step 1 from my last tutorial (duplicated three times, sharpened each of the new layers and set them to multiply, screen and soft light, respectively):

This was too light for my liking so I lowered the opacity on the screen layer to 53%:

I also added a soft light layer to the top, then desaturated that and the multiply layer to get this:

I didn't like the blotchiness on her face so I merged all the layers and used the blur tool CAREFULLY on her face and neck:

Then I used this brush (again I don't know who made it) in the colour F1F2D0:

and flipped it so I got this:

I then added text in font 18th Century and colour 1A2D2D:

(the >>> bits you'll have to experiment with yourself, every icon looks different)
Then I used this
_joni brush:

in the same colour as the font along the bottom and set it to 71% to get this:

I added this
chouchoune tiny text brush (my FAVOURITE):

along the bottom, in the same colour again:

then I took this light texture from
colorfilter:

I took a colour from the wallpaper and set it to colour over the icon, then merged the layers:

I copy/pasted this on to my icon and set it to lighten:

Second icon done! On to the third.

BTW... when you crop, I assume you also re-size? Do you re-size to 100 x 100? In other words, do you do all your work at the final resolution/size of the icon?

If you crop using Constrained Aspect Ratio then you get a square crop every time, which is useful. It's in the grey bar up the top under "style".
