Is Brokeback Mountain really a breakthrough movie?
See, I think this is largely on a tangent from the actual film. A friend of mine has issues with Queer as Folk - namely, that it depicts exactly the sort of drugs and sex lifestyle he's trying to avoid.
The problem is, there is a HUGE number of gay people. They're all different. So how on earth can any single film or TV show be expected to shatter EVERY SINGLE stereotype at once? Surely it's a good idea to just tell an interesting story with real, identifiable characters, no matter which stereotypes they conform to and which they break?
As for the stereotype of gay people being isolated, honestly, surely the whole point of the movie is to *not* alienate gay people? The idea is that society forces gay people in that culture to isolate themselves, not that all gay people are by definition isolated.

They shouldn't be expected to and nor should they I don't think. There are always people bound to fall into a "stereotype". If all stereotypes are gone, doesn't that just mean you've made the characters into completely "mainstream" people with only a label? I know gay people who you would never guess are gay and others who talk, walk and act like the stereotypical caricature gay. Why can't both be embraced?

It occurs to me
Gonin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113194/)
I'm not going to say much more about it, except that it's one of my favorite imports from Japan.

Honestly, I wanted to see it because it's Ang Lee and I always love his movies. Then I read the story and now I'm interested in seeing how they adapted that for the screen. The whole "OMG they're gay cowboys! They're breaking stereotypes!" does not appeal to me AT ALL.
Can't there be a "gay" film that isn't ground-breaking but still good? Can't it just be a film? Wah. I cry about something that isn't going to change any time soon. lol
