How Shakespearian is Brokeback Mountain? It really does follow the conventions of a great tragedy. Ennis is the central character and he has a central flaw - his reticence, his inability to express or love - that eventually destroys him - he ends up alone, with no money and Jack dead. It's also got all the elements of a romantic tragedy, the two star-crossed lovers who are never destined to be together, and whose lives can only end in misery.

How depressing. I know, I know, you're sick of Brokeback. I'll download Lost tomorrow and get back on track.

No, really.

ETA: Augh! I've seen someone in this EXACT tshirt recently and I'm sure I saved the pic but I can't for the life of me remember who!

On the whole, I'd rather discuss BBM than Lost! ;) I like that analysis, which actually makes me feel better about the gripes I have with the story!

...Hey, you're right! I'd love to study it and see if there are a depth of parallels between Shakespeare and Proulx.

Yes, but did you like it? Or was it difficult to enjoy after all the build up? I hope you did enjoy it.

Good points on Brokeback. Not that I'm all that familiar with Shakespeare themes seeing as I've only read a handful of his plays. But I'm sure you're right.

That Rolling Stones shirt kicks so much ass. I want one. I want one bad.
