Have I ever mentioned how much I love Singin' in the Rain? Because I love it to a ridiculous degree. I mean, I've loved it since I was 3 years old and it STILL makes me laugh. I can practically recite the whole damn thing from beginning to end. I think it's possibly the most fun movie ever made. Everybody in it is pure genius (especially Donald O'Connor, who is so gorgeous.)

A few thoughts:

  • Lina Lamont is possibly one of the coolest ditzy blonde bitches ever. I genuinely like the character because she's not a pushover. How pissed off would you be if, without telling you, your boss got somebody you hated to dub your voice? Very, I'd imagine. So she goes and gets her own bac and makes sure she stays afloat. Also, she's hilarious.
  • I still don't think the ballet segment fits in, but I'm starting to think it would work really well as a short film. It's got a strong plot and characterisation in spite of having no dialogue whatsoever, and it's technically completely outstanding. I know we have to suspend disbelief a lot for this film, but it's just never clicked for me that that segment would *ever* fit into a musical made in the late 20's.
  • The costumes and sets are so damn cool! The colours are amazing and Cyd Charisse's green dress is probably one of the greatest movie costumes ever.
  • Seriously though, how cool is Donald O'Connor? He's not only hilarious but he's also the smartest character in the film. Cosmo's obviously overlooked and underappreciated but the friendship between him and Gene Kelly is tangible and they look so good dancing together.
  • On the same note, the central trio in this movie is one of those really strong trios. Like Harry, Ron and Hermione. The 'Good Morning' number is so warm and friendly.
  • I watched with the commentary tonight and even after I knew a lot about this movie I learnt more, particularly about the personalities in the MGM studio at the time. What wouldn't I give to go back in time and just walk through there. They also had the strangest collection of people doing the commentary for the movie, and in a really odd order so that the commentary only occasionally overlapped with the action on screen. I'd rather have seen all those people in a documentary, really.
  • The 'Singin' in the Rain' number is so iconic. It's like the ultimate musical number ever, and it's not even very big or stagey or anything. One guy dancing on a really wet street.

Some tracks from Singin' in the Rain via YouSendIt:
Singin' in the Rain
Good Morning
You Were Meant For Me
Moses
Make 'Em Laugh
All I Do Is Dream of You
Beautiful Girl

Yeah, this was probably the most boring entry *ever* for people who don't like Singin' in the Rain. You really should like it, though. After all, it's arguably the best movie musical ever. Baz Luhrmann said so, so it must be true.

Anyway, here's some gay cowboy tidbits:
Heath Ledger on Jay Leno. He really has gotten downright likeable. In a really ugly jumper. Ew.
BAFTA Nominations
I don't know exactly how these figures work, but I like that Brokeback is Number 1!
Older person's perspective on the movie
I hope this is true.
Film nerdy essay on framing.
Misunderstanding Brokeback Mountain. Which is an interesting article to think about but which has some serious flaws in its arguments.

And finally Bananaphone. Lostfic. Spoiler-free. And in case you've forgotten, the original Bananaphone.

Okay, you're a cab.

Amen about that jumper. And I think it's really weird how he never really holds eye-contact with Jay Leno or looks at the camera for more than 10 seconds at a time. And he's so fidgety it's really cute.

Oh and two more things: *squeee* those comics are so cute. And secondly, your Shoebox_Project community link leads to the Wranglers community as well ;) *shows off icon*

Fixed the [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project link. You can visit it now.

Though I wouldn't advise it if you have anything at all to do all day. Last time I went I stayed for like 5 hours.

*lol* I've read shoebox, I just noticed because I clicked the wrong link and it took me to the right place XD

I love Singin' in the Rain SO MUCH. Gah, now I want to update to DVD ::clutches VHS to chest::

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Hmm. I would say it's worth it in terms of quality, definitely, and it's so cool to see the songs from the movie in ther original incarnations.

Hey, more power to you on the old school love :) I'm a big Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin (more so his variety show) fan. I've seen a lot of old movies but would you believe it, NEVER Singing in the Rain. I thought that was horrible so I bought it on dvd recently. Have yet to watch it but I will! :) I'm pretty lazy with movies. Took me three months or so to finally watch American Psycho.

Seriously though, you should see it. Best movie ever.

Have you ever seen Anchors Aweigh? It stars Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. It's got a fantastic scene where Gene dances with Jerry the mouse.

From: [identity profile] overthemoo.livejournal.com

Nope, haven't seen that. But I'll be sure to put it on my Blockbuster queue :) Gene Kelly is amazing too.

I LOVE this movie TO DEATH. I first saw it in 2004 (hired out on vhs) and watched it four times in that week. My flatmate hated me!! (silly flatmate) *sigh* I want to go watch it now...

LOL it was because of how many times I mentioned it in my Top Fives list that I decided the dust off the DVD.

My first copy was a VHS taped off Japanese TV. They didn't show the Moses Supposes scene. I spent 17 years loving that movie and never knowing that scene existed.

From: [identity profile] bitter-moss.livejournal.com

*gasp* and that is such a great scene! Mind you if I start to say my favourite scenes I'll end up naming the whole movie. Singin' in the Rain and Good Morning are the first to spring to mind and the two songs/scenes I play the most. I also love, love, love Gene Kelly and Syd Charisse in their green dress sexy dance! ;). Wow!! I believe it is David Stratton's faveourite film, and although I usually side with Margaret I agree with him here!

I already named my favourites for the Top Fives. My favourite scene in the movie is Make 'Em Laugh. Mostly because I'm a Cosmo girl :D

I have issues with the ballet sequence not because it sucks - it's gorgeous, especially Cyd in the green dress - but because it doesn't fit in the film the way the ballet fits in An American in Paris, for example. It takes you out of the movie and doesn't fit the overall tone, which is not a good thing IMHO.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that either! For once I agree with David. Crazy. He loves Peter Jackson, too.

Oh and if you haven't seen it I recommend 'Howl's Moving Castle'. It's in my top three new films of last year, it's just beautiful :).

I have anime issues. I really can't watch it. I don't like the style of animation and I largely don't like the plots - I still don't like Spirited Away. I lived in Japan for a VERY long time but I just can't stomach anime.

I remember being shocked by the notion that people 'back then' might be as racy as they were portrayed...I used to picture everyone so button-up and all that.

But it is fabulous, one of my favs, between the comedy and the routines. And of course, Gene!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

What's interesting is that the time period portrayed *was* a very racy, sexy time - but the period when it was shot was much more button-up and conservative.

OMG thank you for posting the soundtrack! I watched this last week when I was sick, it made me feel so much better! Have you seen that car advert with the Singing In The Rain theme and breakdancer? "The Original - Reinvented." That advert is brilliance.

God bless Google. I found it! Its for the Golf GTI. (But like that matters..)

I've uploaded it to YSI. Enjoy!

*nods* and definitely my favourite musical. I love musicals in general. I was so pleased when I grew up and we actually studied the movie at uni and I discovered that the movie was not only the most fun I've ever had watching a film but that it's also a critically acclaimed film. Those two things don't always go together.

From: [identity profile] kilted.livejournal.com

Awww, that little BBM comic is so cute! Arg! I still want to see this movie SO very bad. I have no idea if they're even showing it around here...

And you know, I've never seen all of Singin' In The Rain, which makes me rather sad... *sigh*

Was Lina also the ditzy blonde in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (as the boss's mistress)?

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Nope, Lina was played by Jean Hagen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0353405/). She didn't play any other ditzy blondes I think.

"Here we are, Sunset and Camden!"

Yesterday, I did a tour for arriving ORC attendees. And, wouldn't you know it, I had to point out where Sunset and Camden was to them. *facepalms*

Re: "Here we are, Sunset and Camden!"

That's SO COOL! Also, I saw your subject line in my e-mail and immediately said it in her sing-song voice. *facepalm*

I wish I could go to ORC :(
