Okay, what was up with the low film quality on the shots of demon-in-John when he was torturing Dean?! It's usually such a high-quality show on the cinematography level at the very least. It's a shame, too, because JDM was SO good in that scene. He was good in the whole episode, actually, showing the subtle differences between real!John and demon-in-John and then going full-on, twisted evil with the yellow eyes. And, yeah, kind of hot. Those demons need to stop hitting on the brothers. Or possibly, you know, not.
When he tore into Sam about not killing him I was kind of relieved, to be honest, because it wasn't the nicest or smartest thing but it was in character - he's totally ready to sacrifice himself to kill the demon, but he genuinely doesn't understand what that would do to Dean (and, to a somewhat lesser extent, to Sam.) I don't for a second believe, on the other hand, that John would shoot one of his sons to kill the demon, even with only one bullet left.
I'm interested in the aging population of demon hunters. It would appear that John is the only one who had children to bring into the business. It might just be that John only made friends with demon hunters around his own age, but it seems to me more like they're dying out. The fact that there's a collection of them all over is just as interesting.
Okay, onto the good stuff: the brothers. I was pretty much expecting the final confrontation, since I've read it from every perspective possible in fanfiction since, so I think the scene that most got me was the one in which Dean and Sam exorcised Meg. Dean was hanging on by a thread through that whole scene and Sam knew it. It was interesting to see an episode of the show that sort of turned the relationship between the brothers on its head - usually, Dean is the one watching out for Sam, making sure Sam's okay, taking precautions, and comprimising to fit Sam's needs. The arc of this episode that is most interesting to me is Sam's slow change from stewing on revenge to protecting the family. The moment when he was looking from Dean to demon-in-John, without knowing what had just passed between them, and choosing to stand by Dean's side was amazing, as was his choice to not shoot his father.
And Dean. Oh, Dean. From crying over them getting daddy to 'Gotcha' to laying into demon-in-Meg to killing demon-in-random-guy to confessing his fear of what he can do to facing up to the demon and begging his father not to kill him while spitting blood. I love Dean. I love Jensen. It's unhealthy, how much I love this character. He's heartbreaking and strong and scared and wonderful, and it was so good to see him right on the edge.
It doesn't hurt that he has one of the best mouths ever. There's a moment when he's talking to Sam about killing people, in that tight close-up, when his tongue touches his teeth and it's pure, unadulterated sex.
Overall, though, I was impressed with the season finale. It avoided almost all of the show's major pitfalls to deliver a solid emotional episode. Meg was written a lot better in this episode somehow - maybe it was the interaction with Jensen, who was just so good in that scene. It was good to see the Impala getting some nice action shots before she died. I love that car. Woe.
So much pretty, pretty angst.
GOOD OMENS/SUPERNATURAL CROSSOVER. Dean, Sam, Crowley and Aziraphale in one fic. So good.
Wow, I really don't like Patrick Wolf.
Joss posted about his birthday!
If you missed the HP fandom wank about msscribe, there's a wonderful summary here: The Woman who Sued Herself. That's a lot of crazy right there.
In much happier HP news, James Walters (young Sirius) interview.
Drift Away - Kane. Pretty Doby Gray cover.

Everybody's posted it already, but seriously.
I may not be his biggest fan, but if Orlando Bloom looked at me like this:

I don't think I'd be able to resist doing this:

He's just so sweet. He's more like a grown-up golden retriever now than the puppy he was filming LotR, but still sweet.

Because it's not right posting Paddywhack without Jensen,

Dom and Orlando at the bathtub races, since it's Orlando's big day today.
Gotcha.

2. On SPN: yes, yes and yes. The LATIN! The out-the-roof tension and angst. Plus, was rewatching Skin the other day, and there's a moment there when Sam has the gun on not!Dean that is kind of paralleled with Dean holding their not!Dad...that king of struck me as interesting.

Yeah, I know. I'm not always attracted to him, but he's such a sweetheart, I don't see how you could hate him.
