HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] corellianjedi & [livejournal.com profile] fayte ILU both so much.

Lost Radio today was awesome, though apparently DJ Kaidy didn't like my song picks or something :p hopefully I'll do better next week. You can request songs for this week's themes too! The themes are not!Henry Gale and Island Weather. Go nuts.

It's celebration time - [livejournal.com profile] hackthis wrote Ari. Relaly, really good Entourage fic. So good you probably don't need to see Entourage to read it, cuz honestly I got into Entourage through [livejournal.com profile] hackthis's fanfiction about Ari Gold.

Gay civil unions legalised in Uraguay. Uraguay! Take a fucking hint, Australia and US.

On a related note, someone made a movie about a gay Israeli-Palestinian love affair and then seemed surprised when it alienated many. Sounds good to me! I'm so there.

Regular Friday Five

1. What's your favorite line from a movie, and why?
'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.' It's the only line to ever make me cry not once but nearly every time I've seen the movie. It's so sweet and loyal and brave and wonderful. I love Sam.

2. Who's your favorite villain from a movie, and why?
Lina Lamont all the way, man. She's completely misunderstood. Yeah, she's a delusional bitch, but it's the people around her's fault she's a delusional bitch, and at least she doesn't just roll over and take it when somebody screws her over. Plus she's SO funny.

3. Name one movie everyone else loves that you hate.
Fight Club. I just really hate nihilism.

4. Name one movie everyone else hates that you love.
I dunno, what's a movie that everybody else hates? My biggest 'guilty pleasure' movie, if you can call it that, is Dude, Where's My Car. But everybody secretly loves that movie.

5. What's your favorite Pixar film, and why?
I'm old school, I'm going to have to say Toy Story. I mean, Joss co-wrote it. Plus Buzz Lightyear is the coolest astronaut space toy ever, and he and Woody are so sweet together.
I also want to put in a mention for Monster's Inc. I actually didn't like it the first time I saw it, but the second time it grew on me and now I love it. Sully = [livejournal.com profile] tuatha_de.

Today I saw A Kid in King Arthur's Court

So it's the middle of the day, I'm flicking through the channels to see if there's anything worth watching while I eat lunch, suddenly Kate Winslet appears on my screen in a crappy Disney movie starring that guy from American Pie who reminds me of Jonas in top billing. Five seconds later Daniel Craig shows up and I can't help but sit and mock for the next hour and a half. Starring as King Arthur is Joss Ackland, who aside from having a cool name is Hans from The Mighty Ducks! Turns out he's actually, you know, prolific and blah blah blah. He's still always Hans to me.

The IMDb user review at the time of posting this entry says this movie is 'shockingly awful.' I would agree with that assessment. In spite of that, Kate Winslet is actually good, which is kind of scary. She manages to make her lines sound like they weren't typed by a monkey on crack.

Don't see it, though.

Tonight I saw two movies, the first of which was The Constant Gardener

Only see this film if you're ready for a heavy guilt trip on how the health crisis in Africa is being generally ignored or used, because the film is good, but the message is laid on thick and fast. Still, Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz are both excellent, and there's a good mystery and plenty of suspense to keep the audience involved. The characters are interesting and it is genuinely violent without showing a lot of violence. It's also shot just beautifully on location in Africa, and the music is excellent.

It takes itself far too seriously for me, though. Not that the subject matter isn't very serious, it is, but Rachel Weisz's character, as awesome is she is, is also infuriatingly saintly and perfect, so much so that the film is so self-righteous that it's kind of painful.

Also, seriously, is Bill Nighy in every British film that's come out in the last, oh, 5 years?

The second movie I saw tonight was Slither

NATHAN FILLION > EVERYTHING

I love him. Although in this he plays a more Nathan-like guy than Mal is. He's just so sweet, too. And Nathan has awesome comic timing. Watch the extras for lots of fun Nathan love. He must be the most fun in the world to hang out with.

One thing acting in the movie's favour: Nathan Fillion REMEMBERS TO LOCK HIS CAR. Honestly, people, I am so sick of watching movies and TV shows where people don't lock their cars. Also fantastic is that they always say what we're gonna say. "What the fuck is that thing?" "Holy shit!" And every so often Nathan comes out with a swear word that's just so appropriate I'd burst out laughing. There's also these little things like doing rock, paper, scissors to see who goes inside first. It's really funny. I gotta warn you, though, it's also bloody disgusting. And it mocks sex a LOT - check out the Slither in the bathtub scene. Oh, and Office fans, Jenna Fisher's in it! Fandom collision.

It takes a lot of horror conventions and pokes fun at them without being cruel or obnoxious about it. I love that the little girls are reading Goosebumps. It's got a couple of good scared in it. Also, bizarrely, it has an element of social commentary if you're looking for it. Mostly, though, I would advise it as kind of Snakes on a Plane-style B-movie fun.

Final cute note: The guy who played the sheriff in The Train Job plays the mayor in this, and Jensen's girlfriend is in it too, she has quite a big part. And she's actually kinda cute. Sorry Rowan.

I'm not so delusional that I am actually jealous of Jensen's girlfriend. As if a guy who looks like that is going to be single, you know?

I loved The Constant Gardener. I was very moved by it. And I bought the book immediately after I watched it, but I haven't read it yet.

LOL I know, I'm just kidding.

I liked it but I really felt that it was preaching to the choir. Maybe that's just me.

One day (when I'm really really bored) I'm going to search IMDb and see how many "So-and-so in King Arthur's Court" movies are there. From the back of my mind, besides "Kid" there's also a '60s Disney version with a spaceman, one with Martin Lawrence and another with Whoopi Goldberg - and I know there must be 5 or 6 other versions (at least), all of them rather blah, really.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Plus there's always First Knight, that piece of crap in which Richard Gere plays Lancelot, for fuck's sake. The weird thing about Richard Gere is that he's actually not a bad actor, he's just in relaly bad films. HOW did he think he'd pull off Lancelot?

There's one I discovered through clicking Ron Moody, who played Merlin in A Kid in King Arthur's Court - he was also Merlin in a movie called The Spaceman and King Arthur.

That's the spaceman version I mentioned, with Jim Dale (who voices the US Harry Potter audiobooks) as Mordred. I remember that one slightly better than the other versions of the story because my father has it in a very old VHS tape - and also because it doesn't suck as much as the others.

Thank you SO MUCH for the extra paid time. You are too sweet!

(And "A Kid in King Arthur's Court" was one of my favorite movies when I was really little. I haven't seen it in a while; I feel like I should watch it and then be like "WTF? I liked this?")

No worries, I looked and it said you were running out soon and I thought you might like it. Happy birthday :)

It is a movie geared towards kids; it's not until you're an adult that you can appreciate how really ridiculous it is.

WOO! I love Slither. I don't remember laughing so hard in the cinema. AND HE WEARS TIGHT PANTS! OMG the pants ... *drool*

Best line: "My easy going nature is getting sorely fucking tested" ... he delivers lines so perfectly.

Jenna's husband directed it :)

Funny you should bring that line up, I was tossing up between that and the Bill Pardy gag to use as a closing line for this entry. I loved that line, it cracked me up. He's just so great.

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] truffle_shuffle just mentioned that. Cool!

oh! we got a kind of civil union here too, it can be between two men, two women or even one man and one woman, it's called the PACS, which makes me think of the EVIL PAX in Serenity lol. Almost the same rights than marriage... I think.

mmm... I need to see Slither

I DID!!! I played "Make Your Own Kind of Music"!!!! *sniff* I think you missed it - it was the first song!!!

I have never seen Dude, Where's My Car, but I totally have a clip of the SWS/Ashton make-out on my computer.

Did you notice that the actress who played Brenda also played Katie Brown on Stargate Atlantis? ;)

It took me ages to figure that out.
