Dead in the Water is a near-perfect episode. Good spooky story and scary moments, a bit of brotherly angsting not laid on too thick, Dean being cute with kids, Star Wars references, no extraneous exposition. It's sot beautifully. It has some funny Dean shtick without laying it on too thick and becoming nasty ie. Missouri in Home. It has That Smile and the wonderful shot of Dean pulling Lucas from the lake. The guest actors are great. It has a Jossverse guest star, for god's sake. What more could you want?

The scenes between Lucas and Dean are really incredible. Dean really is just great with kids, and the stick figure drawing he does is adorable and heart-breaking. The second scene with Lucas, the one where Dean talks about his mother, is done beautifully too, with the kids just looking up at the end and Amy Acker's face, and the way Lucas latches on to Dean both at the sheriff's office and at the house when Dean and Sam show up to save the day. And, of course, Dean teaching Lucas about classic rock is awesome. It kind of gives you insight into Dean's lost childhood.

Also, they actually used the beginning of the shot where Jensen jumped into Jared's arms XD

Before I get to my character whinge: in Biblical numerology, forty means many. Not death.

Okay, moving on to Mary Jo. I've read some arguments about why we should give her a chance, and why she isn't a Mary Sue because Mary Sue is a fanon term, not a canon term. Let's just expand the term for the sake of argument and look at the definition of a Mary Sue, aside from the self-insertion fantasy aspect, because I'm fairly sure that it's Sam who's Kripke's self-insertion fantasy. Jo might be more wish fulfillment.

The definition of a Mary Sue. Of particular interest:

A "canon Sue" may also refer to a character whose canon portrayal resembles a Mary Sue, rather than a character who has been altered in fanfiction. Typically, this refers to a character accused of being overly idealized or having other traits of traditional fanfiction Mary Sues, such as gratuitously tragic pasts, unrealistic skills, or a seeming inability for the character to do wrong.

Romantic Sues are seen as idealized versions of the author’s perfect lover, rather than of the author him or herself. Many female characters in shounen anime are criticized for being the (male) writer's romantic Sue.

The most important aspects of the Mary Sue:
-She is the author's definition of the most stunningly beautiful woman ever
-She is created specifically as a romantic interest for a male character on the show
-She is be better than everybody at everything
-She comes out of nowhere and suddenly become the centre of the universe for the characters in the fandom

Let's review Jo, shall we? The first thing we noticed about her is that she's a skinny blonde - just like Jess, Mary and the majority of the women Dean has flirted with over the course of the show. None of the one-episode temporary love interests have been blonde, but all of the long-term girls have. The second thing we are told is that 'sparks fly' between her and Dean. I don't know whether or not Alona and Jensen have chemistry, but would it matter if they didn't? She was inserted into the storyline specifically with that purpose in mind. The first thing Jo does when we meet her is expertly relieve Dean of his weapon. Dean. The trained hunter. And, finally, from her blog we know that her past was gratuitously tragic, and that the bar she and her mother own was John's favourite bar, the meeting place for all the hunters we're going to get to know this season, and somewhere the boys are going to go back to a lot. Does that sound centre of the universe to you? It sure as hell does to me.

None of the arguments so far have convinced me that any of these readings of Mary Jo are wrong, therefore I will continue to call her Mary Jo as long as I like. I have no ill will towards the actress, but the character is a badly written character.

Okay, rant over.

I wish I could go to this. Aussie Supernatural meetup!

Muhney interview!!
If they did make a Lamb action figure, what accessories would he have?

Well, he would have to have extra large pants. He would be equipped with the kung-fu grip. And he would have a lightsaber that comes out of his right forearm.

3. Duncan... yeah I know, but he was messed up and he has a BABY and I just kind of really liked him...
4. SamnDean. Because DON'T MAKE ME DECIDE, Katie, that's just MEAN!

1. Firefy - SIMON! (Or River..... but they're kind of a matched set to me :)) I love Simon in all his forms - dorky and awkward, hot and take charge, brilliant and brainy. He's such a good soul, doing all of this for his sister. He loves her more than anything in the world, and that kind of love always makes me love the person that gives it. He's competent and kind and funny and compassionate and brilliant. I love Simon ever so!

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Faith. She's one of my favorite fictional characters EVER. Such a heartrending, brilliant mix of broken and kickass. I read the novel about her life pre-BtVS and it was incredible - I feel so much compassion for her. She takes no bullshit from anybody, and tries to pretend that she's got it all under control, but underneath she's just screaming in agony. It doesn't hurt that she is possibly the sexiest thing on legs. She's the perfect blend of emotional complexity and gratuitious awesomeness.

3. Veronica Mars - Hmmmm. Probably Logan. I love this show, but I've only seen the two seasons once through, it's all kind of a blur. But Logan is fun and snarky and also fucked up. In fact he's a lot like Faith! Though a lot more dorky and adorable than smolderingly hot. Jason brings a wonderful depth to him.

4. Supernatural - DEEEEAN. (Sam coming behind just by a HAIR) I love Dean. Everybody loves Dean. He's the most selfless character I know of. Sam is the center of his universe, and he would do literally anything to him. He's self-sacrificing to an unhealthy degree, and he honestly wants nothing more than to SAVE PEOPLE (well, unless Sam or John is on the line, in which case, DIE EVERYONE ELSE DIE ;)). He's beautiful and funny and brave and compassionate and he SAYS he hates chick flick moments but he totally initiates one every other episode. Oh Dean. Sam just brings out his inner woobie! Okay I could ramble about Dean forever so I'm cutting myself off there.

5. Red Dwarf - Donno it

6. Sliders - Ditto

7. Battlestar Galactica - STARBUCK. See above re: Faith. Fucked up and kickass. Seems to be a combination I like ;) Kara has an attitude problem up to HERE, and she knows that. But at the same time she is an absolute hero. She's always desperately trying to hold it together, and I admire her incredible strength in managing to succeed as well as she has. Oh Kara. (I can't wait for S3 to start!!)

8. Queer as Folk - Brian fucking Kinney, baby. Sexiest man on the PLANET, but also complex and fascinating. He's deeply moral, however much he pretends not to be. Just a really, really good person, even after all the bullshit he's been through, and that's just admirable. Oh did I mention smolderingly sexy?

9. Stargate Atlantis - Also haven't seen it

10. Angel - I've seen the first two seasons and then snippets of the last three. I love Fred but haven't seen enough of her to judge.... I think I'm going to have to go with either Cordelia or Lindsey. Hmm. Again I haven't really seen enough to have definite opinions. But I love the growth that Cordelia undergoes on this show - she's always entertaining, but she also morphs into a wonderful person. It's beautiful to see. And Lindsey? Well, I just have a crazy crush on one Christian Kane, so ;) He's snarky and hot and evil with some conflictedness about it! What's not to love!

Wow, our lists are very similar! I have to admit I'm surprised Lost wasn't on there. (It wouldn't be on mine, for the record)

Let's play Where's the Typo! "Sam is the center of his universe, and he would do literally anything to him."

I do believe I meant do anything FOR him, but.... that works too :D

1. Captain Mal
2. Xander or Willow, I'm not sure
3. Logan or Veronica (and Mac! too many good ones on that show)
6. I remember watching it a bit... I liked Jerry O'Connell's character

From: [identity profile] hobbitofkobol.livejournal.com

I forgot to tell why! *facepalm*
1. do I need to explain? Captain Mal is the perfect unperfect hero. And he's hot.
2. yay sidekicks, I just love Xander's humour and "normalness" and Willow is so geeky and cute and all (I'm only on episode 2.10)
3. the snark for them both, and well Veronica is smarter than me

From: [identity profile] ack-attack.livejournal.com

1. Firefy - Wash!! Because I love the witty ones.
3. Veronica Mars - Keith Mars because he wins at life.
6. Sliders - Quinn Mallory because he is a hot nerd :D

1) Can I say all of the crew but Book? No? Ok then, Wash. No, River. No, Mal. No, Simon. The man they call Jayne. *confussed*
2)Oz. or Xander. or Giles. Spike&Dru?
3)Veronica. Logan. Mac. Piz. Wallace. Dick. I don't know! I've only seen 3.01 (Want DVDs now ;_; )
4)All 3 Winchesters. I mean Dean. No, wait, all of them, Together, but not like that, but, together.
6)Quinn. or Remmy, possibly.
10)Doyle! Connor. Cordelia. Spike. Lindsay. Puppet!Angel.

1. Firefy: Mal. I love 'em all broken up inside.
2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I could give a reason for each (main) character being my favorite, and make a solid case out of it. But no matter how low the character sunk the last couple seasons, it's gotta be Buffy. This show was my rock during some of the hardest parts of my life, and at the core of the rock was the Chosen One. Someone who wasn't perfect, but was strong and found strength in her small circle of friends and made it through to fight another day.
3. Veronica Mars: Veronica herself. She's gone through some serious roughness, and she just keeps picking herself up and moving on with a wry grin and heaping dose of snark at the ready.
10. Angel: Doyle. I don't think I've ever seen such a good character arc in such a short period of time.

From: [identity profile] lost-within.livejournal.com

2) Spike. I'm a fan of snarky bad boys. Hence my love of Sawyer.
10) Doyle. So adorable, so sweet, so Irish.

From: [identity profile] thereisnosp00n.livejournal.com

oh my heck... i'm starting to like the idea of Jo even less and less... and it's NOT just the jealousy of her being with Dean gnawing away at my stomach lining either

1. Firefly - *ponder* I shall have to go with Wash because he's kind of kooky but nice and just wants someone to notice him every once in a while. He gets jealous of the relationship Zoe and Mal have but then at the same time he sort of gets it, too. And he's funny as heck. x)
4. Supernatural - Dean. Because first of all he's flippin' HOT but then there's substance to his hotness. He's a pretty complex character in that he acts flippant about a lot of things all the time, but when it really gets down to is, he cares more than anyone else. Now i'm going to try and stop thinking about having wild sex with him...
10. Angel - Doyle. Doyle because he's trying so desperately hard to fit in when neither humans or demons really accept him... so he kind of hides a lot and avoids confrontations but then in the end he sacrifices himself to save all those people and it always makes me wibble.

1. Firefly - Simon - Because of the scene where he freaks out about them letting River out of cryo and how he comforts her, and then tells them their story. I just love how he's willing to do anything for his sister.

2. Buffy - Oz - I don't know why really, I just really love him. I think it's his ability to get across a lot with very few words

3. Veronica Mars - Veronica - She's snarky, and smart and helpful, which is a great combination for me. Though Piz is great as well =P

4. Supernatural - That's a hard one, as I like both Sam and Dean, and of course John. I'd have to go with Dean because he really tries his hardest to please his dad, but at the same time loves what he does even though he's had to sacrifice a lot to do it. Plus he's the perfect older brother. Not to mention ridiculously pretty.

9. Stargate Atlantis - Carson Beckett. I just love how completely compentant and unphased he is by everything medical, but the moment he has to do something outside his comfort zone, he completely freaks out. Well him or the Canadian Technician =P

10. Angel - Doyle. The perfect "sidekick" for Angel, their personalities really complimented each other. Plus he sacrificed himself to save others. And he had an Irish accent. Plus he made such a huge impression in such a small amount of time.

From: [identity profile] bitterfreedom.livejournal.com

1. Mal - Because he's ridiculously tortured but still funny and sexy at the same time...
2. Xander - He saved the world with LOVE, what more do you need. Plus his speech to Dawn in Potential doesn't hurt.
3. Veronica - For being a girl that kicks ass without needing any supernatural powers.
4. Sam - Hello! It's Jared Padalecki! But if you need more of a reason, it's because I just want to scoop him up and take care of him.
5. Kryten - Because he makes me laugh like no other character and because he's like a lost little puppy, love him.
8. Brian - Because he takes absolutly no shit but he also has such love for all of his friends.
10. Wesley. Because even though he went to a dark place within himself he still loved Fred with all his heart. Awww.
