It's Christopher Lee's 84th birthday.

Today I watched Brother Bear

Disney's really been losing steam against the CGI animated films lately and this movie's a good example of why. I'm sure people would have rocked up to see it if it had been CGI but it's just not a strong enough film to really challenge the Pixar empire. The story is confusing and convoluted, the smaller entertaining characters are not used to good enough effect and the animation's actually not all that great. The film is confusing in its message as well. I wish they'd make more animated movies like The Emperor's New Groove, go down that Shrek sort of path - it seems to work a lot better. The songs in this were not that interesting and the whole premise was kind of disconcerting. The bears were cute though.

5 out of 10 because it's so average and forgettable.

And then tonight I watched Sideways

This film was not quite the film everyone was making it out to be, but I kinda liked it. It's clearly a very good film - the acting's great, the directing is well-paced and crafty, the locations are beautiful - but it seemed to me to be a whole lot of fuss about nothing. It definitely wasn't as funny as everyone was making it out to be - I think I only laughed out loud a couple of times in the whole thing, usually in scenes involving Thomas Haden Church (who I LOVE and who is definitely underappreciated.)

I think what I liked most about the movie was how realistic the action was. People's actions followed their motivations, everything played out really well and it didn't feel at all convoluted. Also, how beautiful is Sandra Oh? SO gorgeous in this. I also liked their obsessive love of wine - I kept thinking of wine as a fandom drawing all these people together. I found it hard to like the male characters, though, and the female characters were all so perfect, like they were on a pedastal (except that married girl, who I actually kinda liked anyway.) Virginia Madsen's character was particularly infuriatingly perfect. Oh, and Susan from Friends was the ex-wife!

Anyway, 7/10 for this one.

I also watched Star Wars IV today because we're studying it for film this week. Best movie I saw all day. I still get all excited when the Millenium Falcon shows up at the end. I'm a total geek about it but I LOVE it.
