You know the only thing better than Snakes on a Plane? Dean, Sam and Snakes on a Plane. ROFL.

Augh. You know what I hate? Haters. I just got ten posts in a row on my flist pimping a Lost hate place. Also, there's a girl on The Bronze who has been pissing me off for years with her views on homosexuality.

Somebody (far more intelligent and better at presenting his views than the aforementioned person) just brought up the idea that if it's just for financial and other benefits, marriage should be for everybody and not just sexual relationships - "And as a woman in England pointed out, why can't she marry herw daughter to avoid inheritance taxes?"

Of course a large part of the argument for gay marriage is financial - monetary benefits are something everyone can understand, and are especially close to the hearts of conservative/Republican thinkers. However that's only one small part of the whole issue of gay unions.

For one thing, there's the issue of rights when one partner becomes sick or injured. Life partners under the current law are not considered to be family and are therefore given no say in what happens to their partners should they become ill or brain damaged, or otherwise incapable of making their own decisions. They're also usually not recognised as having any rights concerning children that they consider themselves to be parents of.

For another, marriage is a social construct which legitimises a romantic relationship. When two people are romantically connected marriage is a way of committing to each other and showing their pride in the relationship.

Finally, it's not as though heterosexual marriage is always for love. People have always married for reasons other than love - land, money, politics. Limiting marriage to straight people who are supposed to be in love sure hasn't prevented that from happening in the past, so really by this argument marriage in general should be scrapped as a romantic concept.

In denying gay people the right to marry governments are just reinforcing heternormative views, suggesting that gay people are lesser people just because they're attracted to people of the same gender, which is the same as not allowing interracial marriages.

I hope that person doesn't see this as an attack, I just felt like discussing my views.

I know that pretty much all of my political posts are about gay marriage but it's an issue that I feel particularly strongly about. I don't like the Aussie government's views on education or refugees either, but I never feel such a strong anger over those issues, so I never post about them. It's that simple.

Since I've discussed gay marriage so much lately, now seems like the perfect time to share my Maggie Grace pictures with everyone. These are all the invidual Maggie pictures I have on my computer. Yes, all of them - I uploaded them for someone's website but I figured I might as well share with you guys as well. All uploads to SendSpace.

Tonight I saw The Outsiders

This was made in the year that I was born. Cuh-razy. Anyway, two street gangs - the poor Greasers and the rich Socs - have a couple of fights, things get tense, big social commentary on violence among pretty young boys.

I rented this based on the recommendations of my friends list, and let me first say I can definitely see the appeal from a fangirl point of view. Pretty, angsty, slightly slashy boys getting beaten up and waxing philosophical? It's like a fangirl's wet dream. The performances of the young actors are also astounding, in particular the three central characters - C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy, Matt Dillon as Dallas and ESPECIALLY Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid) as Johnny. They are really effective and powerful, even when other factors in the movie let them down.

The thing is, I really didn't think it was that great a film. In fact, I would say it's a mess. I felt like it lacked any sort of trajectory. Why does it begin with the ending? Is it supposed to be an allusion to the cycle of violence and how it doesn't end? Because it doesn't come off that way, it comes off as pretentious, and makes it damn hard to get into the film straight away. Also, anyone notice how the opening is very much like the opening of Apocalypse Now? Coppola is such an overrated director IMHO. The film could also do with a LOT more scenes of characterisation. The one very brief scene we get as an introduction to Ponyboy's family is not enough to really establish the situation he's escaping (I think Rob Lowe, who plays his favourite brother with whom he's apparently incredibly close, gets about ten lines in the whole thing), and a lot of the filler characters are played by good 80's staple actors with nothing to do and nowhere to go. The sympathetic Soc scene felt tacked-on, and a lot of the effects were just irritating. Also, the writing just isn't that good. For one thing it's totally unconvincing without swearing, they seem like kids just playing at being tough, it's completely at odds with their behaviour. For another, a lot of exposition is done with long, talky scenes when it could be much more effectively shown, particularly in a film that's so much about the physicality of the gangs. I know we're seeing it from the point of view of someone who's much more dreamy and literary, but it's still frustrating. Finally, at the end of the film during the rumble, why do Darry and Sodapop completely forget about Ponyboy? I understand that during the fight itself they were distracted, but not looking for him straight afterwards seemed at odds with the characters, Sodapop apparently so close to him and Darry showing particular concern for his safety throughout the film. Then again I suppose the little we saw of them isn't a great indication of how the characters interact under normal circumstances.

There's also too many blatant motifs in the film, some of which are successful and some with less success. I like the connections between trains and Ponyboy's family - his parents were killed when a train hit their car (which we see in a fairly shoddy dream sequence) and his house is right next to the train line. Every dangerous scene is preceded by the sound of a train. The 'staying gold' motif is just frustrating, though - I always hate being told the theme of a movie when I can figure it out just fine on my own.

Anyway, overall I'd only give this about 6 stars out of 10. I appreciate what it's trying to do and especially the stellar young performances, but I found it to be frustrating and messy. Here's hoping I like Rumble Fish better.

ETA: Having read the Memorable Quotes section of IMDb, I'm now somewhat confused - I'm SURE I haven't seen a couple of these scenes. Did I see a different version or something?

6 out of 10

ETA: totally forgot, this was posted today:

I'm sorry, I will construct a well-constructed piece on the political part of your post after a good chai, but as for the first part...Sam. Dean. Snake. Trousersnake. DEAN. underpants. DEAN. They must do it. In fact, I just finished a post about how much they need to do it.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LOL I read it. Believe it or not I'm not a Wincest person. I'm just not interested in incest.

Also could you please credit me for the icon in your icon keywords? I'd really appreciate it :)

Oh, the Wincest thing? Nah, I just think they are pretty and have great chemistry. That's why I want them to do it. It's more HoYay! than BroYay! for me.

This may be a stupid question to ask, but have you seen the video of John Stewart arguing with staunch Republican Bill Bennett about gay marriage?

Bennett, to quote somebody else, "has his ass handed back to him on a silver platter."

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LOL the guy on the Bronze suggested I see it too! I will look for it on YouTube.

I am listening to Nut Bush City Limits right now. It is so much fun. I wish I had beer and a dance floor.

From: [identity profile] tristantrakand.livejournal.com

If for some reason you haven't found it on YouTube yet, I put up an HQ downloadable version here.

I am listening to Nut Bush City Limits right now.

I will admit to being an infidel and say that I have never heard of Nut Bush City Limits before this post. However, I am open to being enlightened.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Thankyou, that rocks!!

In return: Nut Bush City Limits (http://www.sendspace.com/file/okve92). It has a dance that goes with it and it's one of those songs that are ALWAYS played at parties to get people dancing. It's enormously dorky but I love it.

The Outsiders is one of those films that I've always wanted to sit down and watch but have never gotten around to it. I always wondered if it would be a disappointment when I finally watched it.
*now feels the overwhelming desire to rent it coming on*

From: [identity profile] jynnantonnyx28.livejournal.com

Gah! Completely agree with you on the whole gay marriage front. The Australian government is endlessly frustrating on this topic.

Do you listen to Triple J? There was an interesting section on Gay Marriage in the Hack current affairs programme on Wednesday. They interviewed a gay couple who had to go to Canada to get married. It was a interesting interview :) It should be up for download on the JJJ site if you're interested.

I don't really listen to any radio other than 666, which is just because it happens to be what's on in my house. I heard them talking about it there first, though. I was in the shower really mad but it was over before I could call in. Which is probably a good thing, because it would just be angry incoherent yelling at that early point.

I've called in to 666 twice before, I think I was the youngest caller ever. One of those times was to talk about slash. LMAO.

I will check that out, thanks!

From: [identity profile] kry-86.livejournal.com

There is an extended version of The Outsiders. I saw that one. And Rob Lowe gets his due. I think he was fantastic in it. It's a shame that he was cut out of so much of the original. It's been a long time since I saw it, what I do remember is that the first time I watched it, a lot of it was wasted on me. I wasn't very impressed, but upon a second viewing I understood why so many people liked it.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Well then I want the extended edition! I wanted to see a LOT more of his character.

I get why it's popular among fangirls and teenagers but I don't feel that its social commentary is particularly relevant or that it's all that well made.

The acting's great though.

From: [identity profile] sassygirl.livejournal.com

the extended edition DOES have a lot more of his character, a completely new beginning and ending and new soundtrack! You should definitely rent it!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LMAO I actually asked when I was in the video store tonight but they don't have the other version. I might try the other video places.

From: [identity profile] sassygirl.livejournal.com

If you still can't find it, I'd be happy to send you a copy! Or maybe try ripping it/uploading it?

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I will try to find it here first to save you the trouble, but if I can't I will definitely keep your offer in mind and take you up on it. It's a movie that I feel could be really good if it were better treated.

From: [identity profile] sassygirl.livejournal.com

Yeah, Warner Brothers made Coppola cut about half an hour out of the final cut, hence why it's so short of development for some characters.. Poor Rob Lowe, he didn't know until the film opened that the final cuts had been made and 98% of his scenes had gone! He thought he did something wrong, aw!
Ralph Macchio is great as Johnny, I always find it hard to believe that he was 20 at the time, haha!
I'm tentatively looking forward to reading what you think about Rumble Fish when you see it, that film's pretty damn flawed as well but I just can't help loving it since I reacted really strongly to it when I first saw it!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Rob Lowe only gets a few lines in the film but the one when he saw Ponyboy again killed me so much I was desperate for more of him. I just knew there was something good there that was missing. *sigh*

LMAO 20? He barely even convinces as 16, he looks so young.

I've been putting it off a little, but I swear I'll get to it this weekend after the exam.

From: [identity profile] sassygirl.livejournal.com

Aw Rob Lowe's just ace as Sodapop! Emilio as Two-Bit is my favourite though!

Yeah it's insane how young Macchio looks!
Glad you rented the film and that you want to see the other one too, I'm a bit of a big fangirl for both films, it's ridiculous! But at least I'm sort of working on a Rumble Fish website so that's one outlet for the fandom squee!

Good luck for your exam!

Hi, would you like to run for president over here? Because yes, I would vote for you. *clings*

Also, The Outsiders [Movie] was nothing compared to the book. I didn't actually SEE the movie until just recently [or well, less than a year ago] and I was rather disappointed with it. It didn't do the book any sort of justice.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

LOL I don't think I'd be a very good president. Get Viggo Mortensen to run instead.

Apparently there's an extended version. I would like to see that. The kids were really good, at least.

From: [identity profile] corellianjedi.livejournal.com

Have you ever read The Outsiders? I enjoyed the movie a lot (but I haven't seen it since 6th grade) but the book is really very good; I always thought S.E. Hinton had a distinctive writing style that lent itself well to angst (plus it's impressive because she wrote it when she was 16).

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

No. As I've mentioned, I'm a bad book person. Until I was about 12 I read everything constantly, including the back of the cereal packet at breakfast, but then movies and TV took over my life.

It does seem like a 16 year old wrote it. I don't mean that in a derogatory way, it's just that it really captures that sort of feeling.

just dropping in with a half-random comment, but this morning in class we did an instant-translation kind of thing, and the text was on the use of secondary characters to convey nuanced messages or something like that, and ended with the example of Willow and "teenage homosexuality" on BtVS. i do have an issue with the "teenage" bit in all it's "it's a phase" implications ... but hey. the article was taken from a rather conservative newspaper, so you can't ask for too much! lol

/random!

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Well, Willow was an interesting one because she sort of...went gay for Tara. I would argue that she's bisexual if it weren't for the show insisting she was ALL GAY, which I had a few issues with myself. Plus leaving out Tara in the analysis doesn't work for me - a lot of people ignore her, but I feel like it's important to consider her role in Willow's transition.

Anyway, I always felt like the secondary characters were far more interesting than the central character in Buffy and Angel, but I'd say both the main characters in those particular shows had their own nuanced messages about heroism and age transitions that they represented. Almost every Joss Whedon character has his or her own particular message, so using one of his shows to bring their point across doesn't seem particularly fair. Kind of twisting the facts to make an argument.

I have a friend who is quite opposed to any legal recognition of gay marriage. This is rendered less obnoxious by the fact that she's opposed to legal recognition to straight marriage.

Marriage, in her view, should be a religious structure unrecognized by government. Medical benefits should be handled by contract and should not be limited to romantic parter, by be open to other kinds of partnerships.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I thought it was an interesting enough idea to share.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

That still strikes me as a much more rational view than allowing straight people to marry and not gay ones.

As I mentioned before, the benefits of marriage are more far-reaching than just medical. Heterosexual de facto partnerships have better recognition than gay relationships, so if they liked straight people could live together all their lives without having to get married.

From: [identity profile] flamingo-killer.livejournal.com

Ohh yay well-constructed political thoughts!

Life partners under the current law are not considered to be family and are therefore given no say in what happens to their partners should they become ill or brain damaged...
Even worse, a life-partner can't even visit their partner in the hospital if the partner is too ill to consent. I mean seriously, that is probably one of the worst things about it--you know that someone you love is in real danger and you can't even see them.

Finally, it's not as though heterosexual marriage is always for love. People have always married for reasons other than love - land, money, politics.
Absolutely! Lots of people who are in the United States on a temporary visa will also marry someone so they can stay indefinitely.

You know, if you don't like gay marriage, don't get one. Why is this so frelling hard for some people? *hits head against the wall*. Also, if a church doesn't want to recognize a gay marriage, that's fine. I mean, the government should (technically) have absolutely no say or affiliation with any religion unless a practice strictly breaks Federal laws--I mean, if the Church of Sawyer made a practice of stalking Josh into his home and sacrificing young babies in his honor, the government might have something to say since those practices are generally frowned upon.

Ok, next:
I'm downloading all of the Maggie pics--thanks for uploading them like this! I'm making a Maggie sub-folder in my Lost pics and this should be much more organized. I really appreciate it! Though, for some reason, the first link isn't working for me but I might just be stupid.

Finally, Dom is so hot it hurts.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Uh, that's because I fucked up the link. Here you go. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/e6uryw)

People don't want to encourage the gays by giving them the right to marry. It's a fear thing. As for religion, unfortunately both our countries are still dominated by religion, even if they're supposed to recognise separation of church and state.

From: [identity profile] flamingo-killer.livejournal.com

Thank you! It's downloading now :D

Yeah, I totally agree with you. At least YOUR Executive leader isn't a born-again-Christian who is convinced he is executing the will of God.

Suddenly I have an insane urge to punch my fist through the wall. Huh.

From: [identity profile] the-rhianna.livejournal.com

Well first and foremost, which version of The Outsiders did you get? They recently released "The Complete Novel" edition which is much better and has more from the book. We read the book and saw the movie in 7th grade and while I loved it...I was the only one who did in the class.

From: [identity profile] badboyzcrazy.livejournal.com

Hiya :) I just wanted to point out that this 'Nut bush city limits'-song is great. I've downloaded it and i enjoyed it a lot. So thanks!

Also, whoa loads of Maggie there.

Which then resulted me in thinking (and trust me i've tried to resist but it was a lost battle..) - "Holy shit her Dom-picture collection must be HUGE". Hey maybe you could like, upload a monthly batch of Dom pics or something? Ohh such wishful thinking i have. ;]

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I upload a Dom picture every day. There's also the Dom Picspam to Kill Your Computer (http://green-queen.livejournal.com/203095.html) - 14 posts, about 2000 pictures.

From: [identity profile] swear-jar.livejournal.com

Re: The Outsiders, have you read the book? Because I haven't seen the film (but it's on my 'to see' list), but the book. Oh, my god, the book. It's fantastic.

From: [identity profile] v-angelique.livejournal.com

Oh my GOD! You're always good with the pictures, but I haven't thought about Eliza in YEARS, and that just... *fluttering heart*. A girlfriend introduced me to her about five years ago, and though the relationship with the girlfriend got old, the love for Eliza is still there. Hehe. Cheers, love!
