Today I saw Happy Feet
It's kinda scary how much Mumble looked like Elijah Wood, with the big blue-eyed baby-faced look. I completely loved the first two-thirds of this movie - Robin Williams is on top form, everybody else is good, the animation of Antarctica is beautiful and the musical scenes are absolutely inspired and loads of fun. I love a musical in any form and the dance scenes were really clever and inventive. There's a dance scene underwater that's fantastic. Mumble's journey of personal discovery is cute and clever and very coming-out-story.
Now, it's not that I disagree with the environmental message of the film, I really don't, but the movie's plot goes off the rails when Mumble wins over his penguin colony and is then kicked out. It's not that the concept is bad, it's just that it's at a tangent to what the first part of the movie is really about, and that makes the whole thing less cohesive and more of a jumble. It loses all the fun and majesty of the beginning of the film and can't regain it by the final reel, because it's gone too big. The use of live-action actors takes you out of the world of the movie and leaves the audience unsettled.
I think I might buy it on DVD and pretend it ends sooner than it does, because that first stuff is so cool.

It IS weird how much he looked like Elijah, I agree. And yeah, the entire second half of the movie was just...so weird. Robin Williams was definitely my favorite part of the whole movie. The rest of it was kind of "meh" for me. Especially because I kept wondering why the hell they'd make a movie about a dancing penguin when you can't see penguins' feet. Hm...
