Okay, so I need to give Naveen-Andrews.net a makeover. I suck at websites, though, so I have a couple of questions.

1. Who has a Coppermine photo gallery? How do they work? Do I need to learn any code? Are they easy?

2. Does anyone know of any good, cheap webhosting services I can move to? Has anyone moved sites before? Will I have to change my domain name?

If you change hosts, you don't need to change your domain name, you just need to change your DNS servers (I think is what they're called) so that the domain points at the new webspace. I've switched hosts a couple of times and it's mostly a bitch but I guess sometimes it has to be done.

I think they send you that info in your new hosting package and then there should be a place to change it when you log into the site where you bought your domain.

I have coppermine - can offer some organizational advice once you get it set up.

It's MUCH easier to upload to. Put in directory, batch add via web.

I LOVE Coppermine so much. I don't know what I'd do without it.

I just set up another one yesterday for my new site, and I'm excited to get in there and customize it all, weeeeeee!!!!!

You're SO cute when you're geeky.

OT - I miss you - you're not on AIM much anymore. Nothing in particular, I just do :D

I know, I can't even remember the last time I logged on.

Wait, yeah I do... I was looking for you, lol.

But yeah, I'll get on later tonight if you're still around. I'm capping right now and I'm about to watch Idol, so I'm a little distracted. I'll probably get on sometime after Idol.

I'm actually watching Idol this year. Look what you've done to me!

I caught up w/ all the eps and then went back and read all your posts on it.

Oops. WE've hijacked GQ's lj :D

ASD;LFKJAS;DLFKJA;SLDKFJA;LSK !!!!!!!!!!!

SEAN MICHEL FTW!!!!!!!!

That's ok, I'm sure she'll forgive us. :)

He has a great voice! (even though I'm thinking he looks more like Team Fidel) :)

They give them makeovers, don't they?

From: [identity profile] indilime.livejournal.com

Yeah, but I prefer Jesus!

Sometimes they do. They didn't change Taylor's hair last season. I guess it depends on how much liberty the contestants give the makeup artists.

1) Coppermine is as easy as it gets. I have several installed. (Here's one, if you want an example.) The package you download comes with simple instructions to follow, as long as you know a little about FTP. Oh, and you need MySQL. You don't really need to know any code either. It's also highly customizable if you're familiar with CSS.

2) I'm with Dreamhost, and I'm happy with them.

I like how you say 'as long as you know' a lot. Pretty much the extent of my knowledge about coding is the HTML basics. I copy/pasted my current layout and changed the bits I knew - colours, tables, links, etc. I'm kinda hopeless in general.

Thanks for the advice though!

This thing (https://shop.mysql.com/)?

This is all looking to be very costly for me.

From: [identity profile] indilime.livejournal.com

No no no no, not that. MySQL databases come standard with a lot of hosting plans. I'm not really familiar with MySQL, but Dreamhost makes it super easy to set up and Coppermine's installation guide has clear instructions for using it.

I am trying to sign up for a DreamHost account. I am deeply and terrifyingly lost.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Okay, what's a nameserver? How do I transfer naveen-andrews.net to DreamHost?

From: [identity profile] indilime.livejournal.com

I've never transferred to Dreamhost before. :(

If you need me to, I can read up on it tomorrow while I'm at work. Unless you want to do it right now, then I'm useless, sorry. :(

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

It's cool, I'm sure I can work it out eventually. If I can't work it out now I'll let you know ;)

Thanks for this! I'm hopeless at this kind of thing.

I find it really difficult to customise my coppermine gallery, I'm not entirely sure I'm doing something right. Do you have any tips on how to put a header on it?

A registrar is the company you rent your domain name from. They have a setting called the DNS that tells the world where the server is that is storing your files. A host is the company that stores the files on servers. Usually people use one company for both sides, since they are often packaged together for a discount, but you are free to buy each from whoever you want. You own the rights to the domain name whether you have anything hosted for it or not.

The best host I've had is http://www.dreamhost.com, since they allow you to point unlimited domain names to your storage, unlimited subdomains, unlimited emails, and a bunch of other nifty tools. They have a crazy high bandwidth alotment, so you never have to worry about going over your bill or getting the red X of doom. Another nice feature is that since you can have unlimited domains, you can rent out parts of it to your friends (like I do.)

For example, I sublease hosting for $20/yr for 5 GB of storage and 50 GB of bandwidth transfer per month and $1 per GB over. Most people take a free subdomain through me at fandomart.com (hill_, merry_smutmas, red_magicmarker, etc) but they really use my hosting for hotlinking images to LJ since the bandwidth is never a worry. You're welcome to have an account with me or if you want your own, consider using my referral code COELL48 at checkout to get $48 off your purchase and I'll get that discount on my hosting bill too. :-)

If you have any other webby questions, feel free to hit me up.

Peace!

I have my stuff hosted at jooster.com It's not very expensive, I've got 1GB of space, and 40GB of bandwidth/month. Unlimited subdomains and all that jazz.

You won't have to change your domain name, you can just transfer it (which I usually leave up to the hosting company.. if you ask nicely, sometimes they'll do it for you).

Depending on what you consider cheap, I use Banggraphix and highly reccomend them.

2. Does anyone know of any good, cheap webhosting services I can move to? Has anyone moved sites before? Will I have to change my domain

I'm on Dreamhost, and they're pretty good. Been a lot of mail issues lately, on and off, but I don't use them for mail so it hasn't affected me. You won't need to change your domain - you'll just put in the new DNS servers once you have the content copied to your new site

From: [identity profile] maubast.livejournal.com

1. No, sorry.

2. No, you don't have to change your domain name. You merely change your nameservers. I use 100Megs. Top notch tech help, and fantastic up-time (no downtime at all for me).
