Okay, I am on a mission. First, a message for Australians of voting age!

From next Monday, the 16th April, the rules about enrolling to vote in Australia will change in ways which will potentially disenfranchise a lot of people, particularly young people. Basically, the electoral rolls will close 24 hours after the election is announced and people enrolling to vote will be required to produce a valid passport or drivers licence as identification, or else find a suitable person to verify their identity

So, if you have moved house, turned 18, or become an Australian citizen in the last three years, you need to enrol to vote or change your enrolment details. Also if you will turn 18 before the end of January 2008 (the latest possible date the Australian Federal Election can be held), you can enrol now so that if an election is called after your birthday, you will be able to vote.

There are different forms for different states, and they can all be found here. As the law changes Monday, you will need to either fax the signed form to the Australian Electoral Commission on 02 6271 4558 or scan it and email it to info@aec.gov.au before midnight on Sunday 15th April. If you miss that deadline, you will need to download the new form and enrol under the new rules. If you can, try to do this before the 30 June 2007 (the earliest possible date the election can be called).
