Ask Nathan Fillion a question.
I have read
cleolinda's Movies in 15 Minutes book and I declare it to be awesome. By the final recaps of Return of the King I was crying with laughter.
Spoilers for the first of the two-part Supernatural finale. I think I only speak for myself when I say, jigga wha?
ETA: and RIDICULOUSLY SPOILERY FINALE PROMO SHOTS.
Let me just get this out of the way first: Nightshifter is my favourite episode of Supernatural ever, bar none. It has only one serious writing weakness that I can see (the rushed and dodgy exposition as Sam & Dean approach Ronald's house), it has an actually scary concept and an actually clever twist, it has a little humour, interesting supporting characters (I love Ronald!), character development, ties with an overall arc without the arc completely weighing the episode down, and some really nifty camera work. The hand-held stuff in the bank is excellent. More than that, it uses the Supernatural staples really well. That last shot of the Metallicar tearing out of the carpark to the strains of Renegade is one of my favourite endings. Dean and Sam each gets a chance to prove he is both tough and smart without breaking character. Also, the whole idea is cool.
Having said that, I think it would be the rockingest thing in rockonia if Henricksen was a girl. It's an interesting character, and the show could reeeeally use some decent characterisation of girls. As I see it, sexism is ingrained in the culture that Supernatural is trying to represent - that classic masculine America, classic rock and classic cars, white Southern boysriding driving across the country into the unknown, the frontier. I also think the writers have some fundamental difficulty writing a strong, interesting female character who isn't evil. I have serious issues with Jo, Ellen and Missouri, even though I know a great many people love the last two. Even the interesting deep-voiced girl from Hollywood Babylon was not very well fleshed-out. About the only interesting female characters have been Sarah, who managed to do rather a lot with her fifteen minutes of screen time to worm her way into fandom's collective heart, and Meg, who was evil. They try, don't get me wrong, but the girls are generally cliched clones of one another, and when the writers do try they get a kind of polar opposite cliche - a 'pseudo-mother' or a 'tough chick' or a 'smart chick'.
The show also has racism built into it (for much the same reasons) and the number of black baddies is disheartening, but I have a feeling Henricksen is going to prove to be complex and intriguing, and I wish he could've been a complex and intriguing female character.
Last note: I did NOT recognise the girl who played Sherri as Kara's oracle on BSG. Woah. Though I see it now that it's been point out to me.

I am almost as geeky as you! This makes me proud. It's probably because I dated a software engineer for so long and because I hang out with geeks a lot.
