I give up. I officially don't know what movie they think they're making with the title 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince', but it clearly isn't an adaptation of or even close relation to the book of the same title. Spoiler-filled review of the film.

I also don't know why everyone keeps going on about The Middleman's age. He's only 36. That puts him at TEN YEARS YOUNGER than James Marsters and Johnny Depp, just for starters, and only about 12 or 13 years older than Wendy Watson and her ragtag crew.

I'm a little scared to click the link.

People go on about MM's age? Why? Like, in what context?

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

The age difference between him and Lacey, him as a 'father figure' for Wendy. I know she said it herself, but...I mean, at most he's like a big-brother figure. He just doesn't seem that much older.

From: [identity profile] subtle--sarcasm.livejournal.com

Okay, makes sense. Though not really. He really doesn't seem much older than either of them, so I never even thought about it.

How so? (Aside from the small things they always leave out / change due to the nature of a) any adaptation, and b) the length of the book.)

I just feel like there are very, very few character moments that they've left intact. There's not much mention of the memories or Dumbledore & Harry's scenes together, so I don't know how well they hold up, but the Harry & Ginny moments are completely changed from the book so that the progression is completely different. Sectumsempra had a lot of power and impact the way it worked in the book, and Harry hiding the Potions book led him to find the diadem, so I guess that's out. And Dumbledore's surprised to find out what Voldemort was up to? It's like they've just decided to change...not the actions, or the plot, but WHY everything happens the way it does, what motivates the characters.

Yeah, though, I'm excited about that because that will mean there actually is a progression.

And Dumbledore's surprised to find out what Voldemort was up to?

This also intrigues me, because it makes Harry's involvement in the HBP storyline seem more important. In the book, Dumbledore knows everything and just drags Harry along. This way Harry actually has some purpose for being there.

HBP is by far my least favorite book, and I think these changes are actually going to make the movie better, so I guess I'm happy about it.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Well, maybe, but it also means that stupid things like the Room of Requirement scene are totally different and we'll have to sacrifice other good stuff so that the romance can be front and centre, which I always hate.

I like Half-Blood Prince, and I think that diminishing Dumbledore's role in Half-Blood Prince diminishes Harry's accomplishments in Deathly Hallows, and his questioning of Dumbledore, and the realisation he comes to that Dumbledore was kind of Machiavellian. Which is something I like. Half-Blood Prince is, to me, the first half of the final chapter of Harry Potter; it is the learning curve that Harry needs before he can become the leader.

There's other issues I have. The attack on the Burrow seems unnecessary, there's not enough Luna (which, ok, no bearing on plot, but why can't she commentate the match? I love her!), and it seems they left no scene untouched, not even the climactic stuff at the end.

From: [identity profile] phuck.livejournal.com

I guess I just would rather them change things and make a good movie? I love the books, but we all saw what happened when the movies were page by page adaptations. The first two movies were boring. Painfully so. *shrugs*

Half-Blood Prince is, to me, the first half of the final chapter of Harry Potter

That may be true, but it needs to be able to stand on its own. HBP doesn't in the context of the book series, so I like that they are adding things that will make it more distinctive in the movie.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I would rather that, too, but I'd rather keep the spirit of the books, and quite frankly I don't trust Steve Kloves to write a good adaptation of Harry Potter, because he wrote the first two. And the fourth, which I hate vehemently. I'm all for decent, respectful changes to source material - I've just been arguing for them in another journal - but I feel like all of these changes cheapen the story and disrespect the characters and JKR's writing.

Also, there's this (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2008/9/7/details-on-cave-scene-events-on-astronomy-tower-from-hbp-screening), which is just...AUGH.

From: [identity profile] phuck.livejournal.com

Well, I thought HBP cheapened the Harry Potter series in general, so I suppose that might be why I'm not as concerned?

Oh man, that review of the final scenes has me excited? I always thought HBP would be better as a movie than a book.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

But...they change EVERYTHING. Including stuff that doesn't need to BE changed.

I give up. It's 3 am and I'm angry, I need to go calm down and go to sleep.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Oh, and also, I don't want word-for-word adaptations, but gee, it'd be nice to have SOME of the words. Kloves scripts tend to either change EVERY word or put in just the Very Famous Quotes and have them out-of-context.

Although I would, I admit, be happy to just have straight, word-for-word visual versions of the chapters The Silver Doe and The Forest Again. I just know Kloves is going to fuck them up and break my heart.

From: [identity profile] phuck.livejournal.com

I'm not a fan of Kloves either. I'm just not going to get annoyed by movies changes until I see the movie. I mean, people were annoyed with the reports of changes before OotP, and I think that was the best movie of them all.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Well...I was really, really excited in the lead-up to OotP.

From: [identity profile] melissajane14.livejournal.com

Seriously, EVERY SINGLE HARRY POTTER MOVIE HAS BEEN A DISAPPOINTMENT.

Join my side, it's just easier just to accept it.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I don't care what you say, I liked Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix.

From: [identity profile] melissajane14.livejournal.com

They were good films, but as adaptations they were a disappointing. They could have done so much more with the material.

From: [identity profile] corellianjedi.livejournal.com

I don't even pay attention to HP movie news anymore. The movies are so disappointing there doesn't seem to be a point.

In "Cursed Tuba Contingency" MM told Wendy he's ten years older than Lacey.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

I liked Order of the Phoenix. Although I'm feeling increasingly in the minority on that one. The script was SO much better when not being done by Steve Kloves. And I like the visuals of Alfonso Cuaron. So if Cuaron and Michael Goldenberg got together for 7, which they won't but a girl can dream, we might actually have a *gasp* good Harry Potter movie on our hands!

I forgot. Although it proves my point rather nicely. Ten years is nothing. Particularly when the ten years looks like THAT.

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

IT GETS WORSE (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2008/9/7/details-on-cave-scene-events-on-astronomy-tower-from-hbp-screening).

From: [identity profile] entwashian.livejournal.com

I didn't know there were people complaining about MM's age. Frankly, I have trouble with them painting him as a 'father figure' because he's so young, which I see you mentioned in the comments yourself. (Also, by turning him into a father figure, it's kind of implying that Wendy needs a father figure, which I don't think she does at this stage in her life. But that's a whole other can of worms.)

From: [identity profile] green-queen.livejournal.com

Yeah, that bit confused me. I think he's more like a totally awesome big brother who's kind of dorky at times, you know?

From: [identity profile] taraljc.livejournal.com

I am in this place where I sort of am hiding in my LJ. Cos, erm.... I still 'ship MM/Lacey cos they are hot liek burning.

That does not stop me from fully 100% believeing he and Roxy SO TOTALLY had a thing and he may in fact be the reason she is now a reformed succubus. Or may still have a sort of thing where occasionally there is sex all the time.

Also, she would LAUGH ADN LAUGH about MM/Lacey and give him all kinds of shit for it, meanwhile Wendy would be all "OMG you did it with a succubus? OMG DID. YOU SO TOTALLY DID. I'M TELLING MOM IDA." the way a kid sister does when her highschool quarterback brother has sex with a grad student in the physics dept.
