Okay, so here's my...well, flailing about Star Trek
THAT is how you do a summer blockbuster, people. It had great characters, a fun story, a decent villain, gorgeous visual style, and almost more fantastic action than it could fit into one movie. Not action for the sake of action, either, but action that tells us something and moves the story along. I loved almost everything about this movie. I LOVE Chris Pine, man. That guy has leading man written all over him, and he was perfect as the arrogant, skirt-chasing, too-smart-for-his-own-good Kirk (not to mention that he's so incredibly pretty.) I kind of love that he looked beaten up or sick throughout almost the entire movie. I love that JJ gave Kirk daddy issues. ZQ was practically born to play Spock. and every single one of the supporting characters was bang on the money. Zoe Saldana was a beautiful and sassy Uhura, Anton Yelchin was adorable as Chekhov, John Cho made Sulu cool, and Simon Pegg was so much fun as Scotty. Karl Urban as Bones did particularly well as the slightly older, cooler head among the young upstarts, and he and Chris Pine played well against each other - the scene where Bones was following Kirk around repeatedly injecting him was hilarious. Also, the film follows in the grand tradition of having incredible chemistry between Kirk and Spock. And how much fun was it to see old Spock?
Plus it involves TIME TRAVEL. You guys, I love time travel. Terminator, Back to the Future, Lost...pretty much everything with decent time travel is a winner in my book, and this was time travel done very well - it changes the story without changing the characters too much, and gives them all something interesting to deal with. Does anyone else think that JJ spent a lot of time watching Firefly/Serenity, too? There was a lot of handheld stuff and SO MANY lighting flares. Everything was so shiny and pretty. Bah. I love it.
I've seen a couple of the original movies and one or two episodes of the original series - enough to know who everyone is and what the style of the classic show is all about, but not so much that I'm hardcore. I saw this with
baldie_troll who is a Star Trek fan and he wildly madly loved it too, so I guess it must be OK on that front. We're seeing it again next weekend :D I'd like to point out how incredibly brilliant JJ Abrams must be to be able to pull this movie off, considering that he's adapting beloved source material. He managed to make it fresh, exciting and new, as well as good movie in its own right, without completely alienating the fanbase. Genius.
Only minor quibbles: the scene with the 'classic' car was cool, but surely that car was hundreds of years old. And why would young Kirk be listening to 'Sabotage'? Also, the blistering pace means that the ending felt a little sudden to me, like it could've used a bit more of a wind-down or a closer. And why age up Winona Ryder to play Spock's mother?! Other than that, I've got nothing.
