Tonight while I was babysitting I watched We Own the Night
I heard a lot of not-so-great stuff about this when it came out, so it didn't really interest me in the slightest. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this movie. It did kind of go over familar NYPD ground, and Robert Duvall, Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix have all played more or less these roles before - but what I enjoyed about this film in particular was the relationships between these stock roles, which were electric and interesting to watch. When the focus pulled away from the central family conflicts and resolutions the film did lose some interest, and the film's structure was a bit of a hot mess - some set pieces worked better than others, and some events just seemed to be ordered strangely. Still, I find Marky Mark really watchable and engaging, and this film touched on quite a few interesting issues. I didn't even hate Eva Mendes in it.
