Today I saw Milk
I don't know if I'm in the right frame of mind to review this properly yet, but I've decided not to put off reviews because I have a tendency to forget, so here I go. 'Milk' was really good, but I'm biased because of my minor personal involvement with gay rights activism. This movie upset me so much that I had to watch 'The Broken Hearts Club' when I got home just to cheer myself up, and I have a feeling the feelings and thoughts I came out of the movie with will stay with me for days.
First off: pretty much everyone in this movie is on top form. Sean Penn, whom I usually consider to be humourless and overrated, is fantastic. I love Harvey Milk because he greets overwhelming adversity with optimism and charm, but doesn't waver in his convictions. I now really want to see 'The Times of Harvey Milk'. James Franco is fantastic, sweet and a little sad as his romantic interest, and Emile Hirsch is fierce as Cleve Jones. Also, I found Josh Brolin to be excellent as Milk's co-worker and murderer, Dan White. Diego Luna was mostly just crazy, though, and I thought that without further explanation his role was about the only thing I wasn't so fond of in this movie.
It was gorgeously shot, which I suppose one would expect from Gus Van Sant, and it was long but it didn't feel like it. I thought the pacing was mostly very good, and the ending was very emotional.
Here's what got me: these guys were fighting a proposition to repeal laws discriminating against gays. Thirty years on and the fight for gay rights in America has moved forwards only in incriments. It's frustrating and sad. The timing of this movie couldn't be better, what with Proposition 8 passing so recently in America. And while equality has nearly been achieved in many countries, there still isn't the true equality that should exist in any democratic country with separation of church and state. 'Milk', to me, isn't as beautiful or note-perfect as 'Brokeback Mountain', but I found it much more affecting for being true.
