When did Dom DeLuise die?! Also, I watched 'The Accused' last night and discovered that young Jodie Foster kinda looks like young Michael J. Fox. Trufax.

I have no idea what theme I'm going to use for my last [livejournal.com profile] whedonland spam. I have all these adorable leftover pictures I want to use, but at the same time I feel like I want to do a more specific one, maybe a Dollhouse cast spam.

New 'Benry Knows Best'.

Mark Salling posted a picture of him with Dianna Agron at a photoshoot that is...strange.

I am mostly happy about the SAGs, especially the 'Glee' cast. Personally, I think Naya is the best dressed, then Lea. Amber looks adorable, but it kinda looks like her dress is trying to strangle her. I don't get Dianna's weird saggy dress, but I know nothing about fashion.

Three movies last weekend:

Up in the Air

I enjoyed watching this while I was there, but I haven't taken away from it as much as I thought. It was lovely, though. Very beautifully shot. I thought Anna Kendrick did a particularly good job, and the scene where she talks to Vera Farmiga about dating older and younger is absolutely hilarious. I don't think the movie was as profound as it meant to be, but it did look terrific, and there were some interesting ideas in it. The use of real people who had lost their jobs was good, but sometimes it seemed like they were too reflective to be fired on the spot. I felt a little cheated at the end, too. Would probably have rated lower if Chris Lowell didn't have two whole scenes in it. USE CHRIS LOWELL MORE, PEOPLE!!

Inkheart

I thought this was a really enjoyable romp for kids. Might have gotten started a bit too early - could have used a bit more time to settle in - but it was fun enough. I love Paul Bettany. He's such a hottie, and his character in this is probably the most interesting thing in it. I love the way he talks. This movie has a lot of flaws, particularly in the areas of pacing and rounding off the story properly (the end is just silly), but Andy Serkis makes a good bad guy (definite shades of Gollum in some places) and Helen Mirren was funny. It looks cool, too. I don't know why it didn't get better press.

I think the main problem with the movie is that the power of the written word doesn't quite translate on film. I imagine it's more fun to read as a book about reading books aloud.

The Accused

I watched this last night just before bed, which was a bit stupid, as it's a harrowing story about a woman who is raped and wants justice (with a very graphic rape scene in it, too.) Jodie Foster is absolutely outstanding in this movie, and if you're not already a feminist, you should be after seeing this. Her newer movies are all bluster and OTT militant feminism - she should take note of this movie to see how it should be done. It's got great, complex female characters who are fighting and trying to deal with an incredibly unfair justice system and a horribly traumatic experience. I thought most of the movie was terrific, but there were some lines that were too forced, and it is somewhat dated. Still, I really recommend it.

The use of real people who had lost their jobs was good, but sometimes it seemed like they were too reflective to be fired on the spot.

At least a couple of them were scripted (the obvious ones being J.K. Simmons and Zach Galifianakis, but I'm sure there were more). I'm not sure if all of them were meant to be immediate reactions or if some were supposed to be "okay, now that you've had time to accept it, how do you feel" reactions.

I don't think I explained that clearly. It was hard to tell which ones they were supposed to be firing there and then, or whether they were supposed to be post-firing interviews. As a result, there were some that were weirdly reflective mixed in with what you'd think would be real reactions to being fired (like the J.K. Simmons and Zach Galifinakis ones).

I loved Up in the Air, and didn't feel that the ending was a cheat. I do personally think that if instead of the character having an epiphany and things going on in much the same way, the character had had an epiphany and everything had worked out a-ok in some sugary sweet Hollywood way, well that would have felt like a bigger cheat to me.
