Why are icons these days all so fiddled with you can't actually see the original picture? I don't care how pretty or artistic it is, I want to see the original and I like entertaining text on it, too. I'd prefer a clear, funny, interesting or clever icon that is maybe not as good quality to a gorgeous but boring one.

ETA: also, I want to memorise every phrase on this site. I've been there before and managed to only remember 'Go kiss an orc,' 'Your head is empty' and 'I love you.'

I make simple icons. A bit of coloring, maybe text (when I can come up with something fitting and/or clever), and I always thought those were the boring ones, even though I enjoy making them anyway. I prefer simple icons too, I've realized. Things with too many brushes or textures just ruin the picture for me, so I agree with you on that.

Oh, and funny icons FTW! Always.

It's true, a good picture with a good quote will be used a hundred times more than a pretty icon that doesn't mean anything. Not that that means people should be lazy and not try to make them look nice.

Funny icons ALWAYS win.

I occasionally like arty/edited icons, but only if editing the image is needed to portray something you wouldn’t be able to with the original. But I’m not really into overly editing icons just for the sake of it.

I don't like manips either. Occasionally I don't mind a couple of shots together in an icon, but that's about it.

I must say though, I do have one exception to the arty-farty rule, And thats [livejournal.com profile] iconofilth even though they are overly edited I just can't help loving her icons, they're just so vibrant. But then again I'd probably never use any of them on my journal. I like to have icons that can go well alongside posts/comments I make.

I've found that I tend to drift towards nicely cropped, well colored icons with little to no text. Too much fiddling on the picture just doesn't appeal to me. Also? That radial blur thing everyone is doing is, uhm, odd, and people need to stop making VM icons with the huge CW watermark in the corner. [/icon vent!]

IAWTP so hard.

I was just thinking this yesterday when I was working on a set, how people are always bitching when I make plain icons. Icons =/= art to me. I prefer practicality over pretty any day. (Bonus points if they are both.)

I really just like my icons to be pictures. I don't mind text, but mine usually go towards picture or text because it's easier and gets the point across.

I got a comment in a lims last week that said that it looked like "nothing was done with the picture." This was the icon:

HAHAHAA how much more am I supposed to do??? I totally agree with you, simple icons are where it's at. Once in a while Ill go for something that's all artsy and/or fartsy, but not really.

I know! I'm a fan of interesting crops and relatively simplistic colouring. But quality's important to me. It doesn't have to be fancy, but as long as the person looks like they know what they're doing.

I quite like brushes and text and textures, but not at the expense of the picture, and not just for the sake of it. I do save a lot, but I don't usually use them. LOL I have just over 2000 icons on my computer - and that's just Harry Potter ones!

My icons are like that. Mostly because I don't know how to do the artistic stuff on them.
