Why is it that if you don't like the idea of a female character on Supernatural suddenly people are accusing you of being reactionary, or anti-feminist, or stupid because you haven't given them a chance? I don't think that just because a character is female they're automatically bad, I think that these characters are bad ideas right from the start. Doesn't ANYBODY remember when Jo was Alex and that hideous 'journal' of hers was published? Or that Jo's breakdown could almost have been exchanged for Ruby's and probably started the same way as Bela's? I think these characters are bad concepts, and that wouldn't change if they were male characters. It isn't a reaction against OMG GIRLS, it's a reaction against CRAP WRITING. I know I'm beating my head against a brick wall expecting quality from Supernatural out of the gate but dammit, I like the show and there's a groove in this brick wall waiting for me.

For me it's just a simple reaction: this show is about Sam and Dean. I don't want female leads/every-episode-regulars because they will inevitably distract from that. Hell, I don't want other male leads, either, but female leads come pre-packaged in mainstream television with the romantic hookup possibility.

I don't care how good or bad the writing is. I just am not interested.

People can enjoy them all they like, more power to them, but I agree with you. It's my right to say that I just don't like the concept. It doesn't make me anti-feminist.

I'm not overly fond of the idea of extra regulars either, based on how the show has developed, but I liked Ash last season and by the time Born Under a Bad Sign came around Jo was tolerable as someone for the boys to play off rather than a romantic lead - I didn't even mind the unrequited crush thing she had, as long as it stayed an unrequited crush, because that girl was no good for Dean. I just have this awful feeling that the boys are going to end up having some pregnant dominatrix girl-Dean sitting in the back of the car.

Yeah! Side-line extras who make appearences that serve purposes are good. Ellen, Ash, and even Jo to an extent were okay with me once it was clear the boys weren't going to stay with them or hunt with them.

I just have this awful feeling that the boys are going to end up having some pregnant dominatrix girl-Dean sitting in the back of the car.

Exactly.

Am I the only one who hopes they're a couple? *The girls, I mean!

I guess I'm icked because right off the bat, "Sexy and beautiful"... uh, no. If a woman's going to be an awesome hunter, she's probably a hairy-knuckle bull dyke. Researchy-hot-librarian type? Sure - I miss the shit out of Ash.

You got a link to the actual sides? I want to read these things for myself.

And like I said before... I've got no problem with the hating of the characters for just being plain bad characters - female or not. I'm just annoyed the very specific few people out there calling them names and then having people who don't even watch SPN asking me why my fandom is full of a bunch of name calling misogynistic women.

You know me - like/dislike/petition to be written off - it's your call. I just say WTF when I don't get something in specific. :/

Yeah, they're right here (http://community.livejournal.com/supernatural_tv/1058290.html).

The problem is that everyone is lumped in with a few people, when there are so many reasons to dislike these characters.

'better hunter than Sam and Dean'???? ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS?

OMG, no WONDER everyone hates them already. *dies* Seriously, those are some of THE worst characters ever contrived. :( Why do they INSIST on pushing this crap on us? The only thing I can hope for is that those are some SERIOUSLY bare bones ideas that have not been tinkered with by Kripke yet. *prays*

I still stand by what I said - calling them names doesn't help. But I'm with everyone else in the initial evaluation - those characters sound one-dimensional and very Mary-Sue. I'm just hoping that when it hits the screen, there's some sort of saving grace there. PLEASE let them decide against making the one a BETTER hunter than Sam and Dean. I know they're not THE BESTEST EVER, but... just no.

Bah, thankyou. THIS is the problem I have with them! In two lines the writers already managed to make me dislike them. Even though they sound like characters I've loved in the past (although largely only when written by Joss, which probably isn't fair.)

From: [identity profile] affectingly.livejournal.com

Well, I don't even think it has to do with that character being written by Joss (we're talking Faith, right? Because that's who the one reminds me of a lot). It has to do with the universe they're inhabiting. In Buffyverse, there are slayers who are *supposed* to be better than everyone else, stronger, tougher, etc. But in spnverse? There are no slayers. There are just a bunch of low-tech, scruffy, and socially-challenged hunters with an affinity for guns, rock salt, and knives, ya know?

These two just don't belong in this 'verse.

Are you not on my secret Supernatural filter? I posted the breakdown the other night.

I think I am going to puke...but I read the actress's blog who plays Ellen today and was "spoiled" about the "chicks" and that is what they will be....chicks. Nothing more...and of course they will SUCK as actresses because with descriptions like that? They will always suck.

I am sooooooo disgusted with what they are doing. If I wanted to watch guys and girls hang out and shit I would be watching...the OC or one tree hill or whatever kids are watching these days. gah.

This knowledge that they are adding "females" for the boys makes my gorge rise. Why in the hell do they think they have to add women to this storyline...because it worked so well in the past? I think not. I know I am preaching to the choir but oh well.
Stoopid CW. Guess I know I will be looking for Jensen and Jared in another show after this next season...because I don't think they will make it to 4. Damn where the hell else am I suppose to get my eye candy???

fuck.

There's still time for things to change; there was a DRASTIC change in Jo by the time the first episode of season 2 aired and then she changed even more as time went by.

I mean they are beautiful, and sexy and super-warriors... that's not a woman, that's a Mary-Sue.

And also, it's Sam and Dean's show. They are men (haha I almost wrote women .. oh it's too early for serious discussions). So the show is about male characters and I like that. Doesn't make me anti-feminist. There are enough shows about beautiful and sexy women already *sigh*

Kinda makes me want Jo back :o
