TWO REQUESTS to get this party started:
1. Does anyone have the Rent soundtrack that they might consider uploading for my sister?
2. Does anyone know where I can pimp The Hub convention? LiveJournal, websites, anything connected with Angel, Veronica Mars or Dead Like Me. Anything.

SO EXCITED ABOUT MUHNEY.

Idol: Love Holly, like Brianna and Rosie Ribbons (the latter just for the name, I think.) Perfectly happy with who went through from last night.

Just so everyone knows, my new favourite icon makers is [livejournal.com profile] seewhoiam @ [livejournal.com profile] oblivion_ic. Really, wow. Lots of pretties in fandoms I like! There's also some VERY pretty icons over here from Supernatural, Torchwood, all kinds of cool things.

Apparently, gay unions were sanctioned in medieval Europe. How awesome is that?

FULL SUPERNATURAL SEASON 2 GAG REEL. I found it while coding and FLIPPED THE FUCK OUT. It's AWESOME. They have the best gag reels ever.

There's a great Supernatural trivia contest for awesome prizes over here that I just spent almost an hour and a half on. Did anyone know Morena Baccarin and Jensen Ackles worked on an unaired show called Still Life together?

[livejournal.com profile] immorallily made a great boytouching spam.

Guess what's coming back on September 6th/September 7th for Aussies? LOST RADIO! Yaaay.

Gerard Way singing Umbrella because he's awesome like that :D

Wentworth Miller chillin' with Luke McFarlane, ex-boyfriend of T.R. Knight.

Pictures of the Heroes cast in Tokyo thanks to [livejournal.com profile] txvoodoo. There's stacks of world tour stuff EVERYWHERE, so you should be able to find what you're looking for on LJ.

Today I saw 15

This is a frenetic, MTV-influenced film about disenfranchised teenage boys in Singapore. I have to get a few things out of my system about these 'MTV generation' films before I actually review the movie.

This film style, the confrontational, fast-paced, brightly-coloured and music-based film style that so many directors employ when making films about youth, work so well for me because they capture what youth is like. The Dumbledore quote 'age is foolish and forgetful when it underestimates youth' is what comes to mind whenever I read reviews of movies that bemoan that form of pace and style. I think part of why I'm so interested in the style is Romeo + Juliet (which interestingly has a similar rating to 15 on IMDb.) That came out right at the start of my teenage years and it really captured a certain feeling, though I wasn't able to analyse that until I was much older (I just thought it was awesome and the soundtrack was cool.) Short attention spans and those extremes of emotions, the highs where you're singing and screaming and there's nothing but colours and whirring energy vs. the equally unreal lows where you can barely move and it's like you're underwater - when you're older it's probably manic depression but that IS being a teenager. The heightened, dizzying way everything looks and sounds in movies like these two represents the heightened feelings of being a teenager, when you're just discovering the world for good and bad, and you're so self-centered you think nobody else in the world feels the way you do (if they feel anything.) Films like these capture that perfectly and I love it.

I found 15 really interesting (and not just for the homoerotic not-really-undertones running through it.) It might just be my cultural background, but I felt quite connected to the kids in the movie. There's a lot of dark humour that offsets the harder stuff and it's pretty unflinching. The boys in this movie don't have much of an emotional attachment to anything but each other, and there's a real sense of despair that permeates the film. One section where three of the boys try to find the perfect building for one of them to commit suicide from is the best mix of that despair and the humour, and the interesting techniques. These are tattooed and pierced gang kids, but they're real teenage boys underneath, looking for a connection. I think the kids were great, too.
