All I could figure was that those Whedon boys were having a good time coming up with silly villain names, one of them hit on "The Pink Pummeler" and they decided that he needed to at least get a cameo. It cracked me up, I'll tell you!

Yeah, as soon as Penny died, I knew that people were going to complain about that. What both authors claim in the reviews you've linked is that Penny had no personality beyond being "generically nice and sweet" and that she had the "least developed" personality, which I think are entirely untrue. And both seem to mistake kindness and compassion for weakness, which are really Penny's strength.

I think a lot of people just don't get Penny. When people say that they thought she was going to turn out to be Bad Horse, or that she should have been Bad Horse... I just get confused as to why.
