Tonight I saw Soldier's Girl
This was a tough movie to watch, but Lee Pace was absolutely outstanding as Calpernia - sweet and strong and vulnerable at the same time. I can't be sure, obviously, not having been there, but the film felt like the story wasn't tidied up or altered much for the film. Everything was very urgent and real, and the motives and dialogue of the characters could be ugly and ineloquent. Whether it was due to budget constraints or intent, those touches lent the film a sense of reality and urgency that worked well. The romantic scenes were very sweet without being overdone. I felt like none of the other actors were quite as good as Lee, though.
One thing I did feel, though, was that this movie also accurately portrayed the kinds of guys the army sometimes attracts that perpetrate these crimes - they're non too bright, and they're fond of violence. This is probably going to be a wildly unpopular opinion, and obviously I don't mean that everyone in the army infantry is an isolated sociopath like the two men who killed Troy Garity, but I am saying that being paid to be violent for your country attracts those kinds of people. The 'don't ask, don't tell' policy is completely ridiculous (as is pointed out in one of the clunkier scenes of the movie) and the army needs to do a lot better to offer good people in the army who don't fit the straight, white, macho, male mould better protection.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON:
I read some of the boards about this movie that were discussing the sentencing of the character played by Shawn Hatosy, and how he deserved much longer as a conspirator to the crime. The way they portrayed it in the movie, I think he needs mental health care MUCH more. He got the kid to kill Barry in order to feed his own need for that wartime scenario he craved, the need for love and attention, and I'm not sure if he was even fully, consciously aware that he was doing it. From the kid's end it was a hate crime, no question, but I didn't get that from the movie with the other guy.
Anyway, pretty confronting movie.

Jonatha is not exactly a common name, either.
